Introduction - Sarah, 34 years old, 3 weeks in, 🇬🇧

Hi, I’m Sarah. I’m 34 years old and live in the UK :uk:
I’m new to Keto and came to it after my older brother recommended it to me. I am into my third week of keeping carbs under 20g and am just starting to feel better after experiencing what I understand to be ‘keto flu’. My brother has been Keto for four years and has been guiding me through the process steadily, which has been an enormous help.

I weight 8st exactly at 5’2” (or 52kg at 158cm) so am not in this for weight loss, particularly. I exercise with weights 5 days a week so some of my weight is lean muscle. The reason I decided to transform my way of eating was because I felt more and more bloated and sluggish and tiredness was creeping in ever more frequently. I also felt a slave to craving sweet foods and wanted to have more control over this. I’d been cutting down on my carbohydrate intake for some weeks prior to starting Keto as I’d noticed bread was making me feel bloated. I then gradually added more fat until my food started following the 75 fat / 20 protein / 5 carb ratio.

Three weeks in and I am really delighted to have started this new way of eating. It feels good to eat the foods our ancestors would have eaten. I’ve never eaten much processed food because I’ve never seen it as food! I have always shunned ‘low fat’ and have always used butter and cream and proper fat to cook with. However I used to eat a lot of fruit and grains and legumes which has been a big change for me. I’ve noticed a slight decline in my workout strength but I expected this and it isn’t insurmountable by any means.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and give you some background info. Oh, I have two children and a husband too :blush:I’m hoping my husband will get on board with this eating plan and he has already shown an interest but I don’t want to push-I hope my renewed health will be advertisement enough! My son has severe autism and is a real carbohydrate magnet but I’ve been making small changes to his diet where possible as I feel really concerned about the sugar he consumes. My daughter eats a much better diet so I’m introducing a bit more fat and protein into her diet and lowering some of the carbs, though not completely as I don’t want to push her too hard.

Sorry for the long post and I look forward to getting to know you all

Sarah xxx

Hi and welcome
I’m another UK keto’er
I hope you’ll find this as warm and welcoming a place as I have.

Edit to add I’m not sure if you have seen these guys in the press but Claire from Leafie.org was presenting at the PHC conference in London last weekend. You might find it interesting.

Hi Sarah. Welcome to the forum. It’s a great supportive place to be. I started off by binge listening to the 2keto dudes podcasts and learned loads. Good luck with your journey.

Hi, I’m happy to see more UK members on here! Thanks for the link, I will check that out as I’m trying to learn as much as I can.

Thanks, I’ll check out the podcast you mentioned. I’ve noticed that it seems very supportive here

Welcome to the forum! Good to see you found the UK community category too.

Looks like you’re well on track already, but if you need any assistance, I don’t know of a more knowledgeable group of people than those on this forum.

Enjoy your keto journey

Rob.

Hi, thanks. Yes my brother has been invaluable in pointing me to Dr Stephen Phinney and to various books he’s read and recommended. He also showed me Bulletproof Coffee and other recipe ideas so I’ve had a very good start

Welcome Sarah! If you haven’t seen “The Magic Pill”, I highly recommend you do. There is a story about a family with an autistic daughter that is quite compelling.

Good luck.

Thank you. Yeah I saw the UK sub-forum so I’ll keep checking that one

Thank you. I’ve heard of the documentary but have never seen it. I have seen several articles mentioning autism and diet on Keto sites and am checking it all out. My son has exceeded expectations in terms of what he has achieved and I hope implementing some diet changes will help him more. It’s incredibly challenging to get him to eat foods he doesn’t like the look of or smell of. He eats a lot of meat and fish though and has always kept away from fruit (except grapefruit ) but he loves bread. I have hope!

Welcome Sarah and congrats on your progress and success! When I first started keto I read that the flu-like symptoms would probably be gone in a few days to a week. But like you, my symptoms lasted closer to a month. The good news is after getting over feeling lousy for so long, I had more energy and felt great plus noticed the weight coming off faster and in larger amounts. Good luck on your journey!
