Interview

(Ron D. Garrett) #1

@carl @richard I will be interviewed on another podcast with my story being a ketogenic person over 50 powerlifter. Are there any questions that you would have me ask if I get a chance?

Of course I will bring up the show and how you guys were crucial in my early days of keto and helped me to not only lose 70lbs but rediscover my powerlifting (still bench press of 400 at 50 yo :joy:).

Lastly, also will be discussing strategies to proliferate keto to minorities in greater numbers as well as to more churches, other religious organizations, and other organizations.

Woo, I gotta hear this one. When can you tell us which one it’ll be on?

(Ron D. Garrett) #3

Didn’t want to advertise it here on the site as my intention was just to see if the guys had a topic or two for me to speak on. If they give me the okay I’ll bring the name of the podcast up. Once I ensure that it happens I’ll get with those via mail or something who would like to hear it. Yet trying to do what I can to spread the message. Thanks for the encouragement my keto brother!

This is all good news, Ron!

Let’s have a Zoom/Skype call soon.

(Ron D. Garrett) #5

Okay. I’ll have to get my wife to help me with it :joy:. Just let me know and thank you guys for all that you have done for me on my journey. I’m paying it back by mentoring around 10-15 people on keto right now and hopefully they’ll pay it forward. You guys rock!!

So, I’d be interested in your perspective, and perhaps there’s an interview question here somewhere, as I imagine it’s not a totally uncommon place to be and speaks to your strengths.
Late forties, found myself at 35.5 BMI, found keto, started losing, lots of energy, lots of bike riding (4000km last year), got my cardio sorted (had highish bp and high heart rate, no more), stalled out on weight loss after 7 months at 25.1 (sigh, fasted down to 24.9 but it doesn’t stick, Phinney weight has a gut), kept trying for a couple of months then decided to pivot to strength, figured more muscle would help.
Found Starting Strength by Rippetoe after some research, got some Iron, started lifting it, but given my age I don’t lift again until I stop hurting, longer recovery time, let my body tell me.
Four months later I’m much stronger, and it feels GOOD. You don’t realise what’s gone until you get it back ! I weigh the same but BP has gone from 30% BW to 80%, deadlift to 1.2 BW, Squat is the same as BP for safety as I don’t have a rack but I do 15 reps instead, ass to grass (strategies requested).
My intention is to get to being strong, and then maintain in a time efficient manner. As an older powerlifter, what would you suggest to someone with these sort of goals, who’s still a newb ?

Done.

(Ron D. Garrett) #11

What you are doing sounds good to me. I do a little heavier and less reps as it helps my strength level
Creep up faster.

I’m still a powerlifter but I don’t compete so I lift for enjoyment now and at our age we should lift for that reason unless we are doing it as a job with endorsements.

Have fun, challenge yourself, and enjoy. With keto age is truly a number and all that we have to do is be careful to avoid injuries.

Blessings my keto friend!

Yeah I think we should find an exercise outlet that we would do just for fun and then lean into it. For me that is cycling, I ride for fun, I ride because I don’t drive, and I ride because I enjoy using my muscles.

I did lift for 10 years, and I liked to lift heavy, but for the past 2 years I have just done weight bearing exercises.

I don’t think any of this helps our glucose control, nor does directly utilizing energy change weight loss much at all … but adding muscle cells and fat cells with more mitochondria (by becoming fitter) will increase the amount of energy you burn every day. Burning more energy at rest will mean you can eat more before you become satiated.

Thank you!
