Interpreting Ketone Measurements

#1

Can anyone tell me what it means when Ketones consistently test higher in the morning than in the evening?

I used to measure blood Ketones and now I’m using a Ketonix. Either way I get my highest readings in the morning. When I do an evening test it’s tyoically 2-3 hours after my last meal and it’s always lower than my morning fasted number.

Don’t most people get a higher reading later in the day? If so what does this say about what my body is doing or not doing?

(Been eating Keto 10 months)

Hrmmm… from the ketonix website:

KETONIX® indicates the breath acetone, not blood beta-hydroxybutyrate. Breath acetone comes from AcetoAcetate which is formed when breaking down fatty acids for energy. Blood beta-hydroxybotyrate concentration is the current buffer of not used AcetoAcetate.

If you want to know your current break down of fatty acids for energy, breath ketones are a good indicator. If your breath acetone is low it means your body gets energy from glucose. Exogenous ketones is energy for your body and in most cases lower your bodys need to use fat as fuel with a result of low breath ketones.

From this…are you eating any exogenous ketones during the day? If not, then the only thing I can think of is that your circadian rhythm is working(?) Decreasing ketones at night to sleep and the jolt in the morning to wake up?

Unless you have been sleep-eating, you have been fasting overnight, so your liver has been making ketones for you, to keep your brain going, among other things. Your ketone level fluctuates throughout the day. I would advise not worrying about it.

Not taking in exogenous Ketones. The morning energy I great for sure and I guess I do appreciate not feeling wired at night! Never thought of it that way before. Some days though I do wish the energy would continue a bit later into the day though.

I’m never out of the low ketosis range. Just want to optimize and would love to experience that next level.

Thanks for the response. Just trying to optimize!

You’re doing just fine. Keep calm, and keto on! :+1:

With a blood measurement device (more accurate) - yet I had 0.4mM at 10am and 1.3mM at 10PM in the same day.

Found a paper showing they go up and down all day … 3AM was the highest.

So I gave up on chasing number shadows.

Just watch your carbs and wasteline …
