Hi there I’m looking for opinions on intermittent fasting…I did it a few weeks back and did ok with it, I didn’t really enjoy the hungry feeling all morning, or having to cut cream out of my coffee…I’ve been trying to enjoy black coffee but I just can’t but since discovering bulletproof coffee in the morning I’ve technically not been fasting. Even though my first meal of the day is at 12pm still and my last meal is about 7pm.
Is there any one here who does intermittent fasting but still has cream in their coffee? Is this even allowed? From what I understand anything 50 cals and under is acceptable on IF. I’d like to give it another go, but I just found myself so drained at the end of the day. I’m happy to cut out my bulletproof coffee to give it a go, but I don’t think I can do a whole morning without cream in my coffee!!!
Intermittent Fasting - yes or no?!
You shouldn’t have had a hungry feeling. If you’re properly adapted then fasting comes naturally.
When fasting it it is very important to supplement with salt and electrolytes, then the tiredness is not an issue. Also you eating days should feasting meaning to eating to satiety.
I’ve been doing IF 18/6 17/8 for months now. Maybe 2 to 5 times a week. I’ve added OMAD for the last 3 weeks 2 to 3 times a week. It is getting easier and I’m feeling better during the fast and post fast.
My mental clarity was already good but now it is great. There was one day I are breakfast and could not make it through dinner. I listened to my body and ate. The OMAD fasting broke my stall and I’m losing weight again.
My very persistent High BP is coming down with the fasting as well.
I hope this helps.
This is very interesting, thank you. What do you drink during your fast?
I think it depends on if the IF is for weight lose or health, If weight lose the cream in the coffee should not take you out of ketosis (there is a you tube on testing all coffee additives). however if fasting for autophagy then do not do the cream and probably not even the coffee.
most importantly is enjoy the journey, and if it slows you down a tiny bit so what. Its the carbs we need to cut not the fat.
Clare
I should add that I do water, black coffee and green tea. So guess I’m lucky as I am a black coffee drinker. I resist adding calories of anysort to my fasting period so that I get the maximum benefit.
You might want to add some HWC cream to your coffee till you get more used to fasting and then ease out of it. Another suggestion is to eat breakfast and lunch and skip dinner so that you don’t need to drink coffee. Then you can skip lunch and dinner when you want to go to OMAD (One Meal a Day).
Play around with fasting windows and try not to eat (snack) between meals. Over time as Megan Ramos says, you will develop a fasting muscle.
When I eased into Time Restricted Eating (breakfast later, dinner earlier, no snacks) it took several weeks for my hunger to reduce. Now 9 days out of 10 I have no desire to snack.
I started with TRE and move to IF 18/6 and then OMAD. You can do this. I’ve been easing into fasting since July.
Clare, I wish you all the success with your fasting journey.
Hi @ClareBear
I am doing 16/8 at the moment Monday to Friday, and then easing off on the weekend and having a breakfast first thing if I fancy it.
For me really, it’s a toss up between the will power of not eating in the morning, or at night, and with it being really F-cking cold and dark now on a night, I like to keep my calories available for the evenings when I crave food more.
I’ve been dabbling with BPC at midday, also occasionally BPC first thing in the morning… I’m only making it with cheap Coconut Oil though rather than the MCT oils, so I’m not feeling that much of a mental/cognitive difference, and hunger reduction.
Overall, I’d say hunger levels for me are pretty damn low when I don’t take in a proper breakfast and just have black coffee only, and I really feel like my body is burning fat with that dynamic…
Sorry, doesn’t really answer your question about cream, just sharing where I’m at.
Thank you for sharing to be honest I’ve used MCT oil as opposed to coconut oil in my BPC and I’ve not really noticed a massive difference? It said to up the dose gradually…I tried a whole tablespoon this morning and I noticed no difference? Other people may disagree.
I guess if I want to see the best results I’m gonna have to man up and go cold turkey on my delicious coffee in the morning. It definitely feels like snacking weather!!
I know what you mean @ClareBear - and i think this is my issue with it really… for me to make a Alex style BPC, it’s 500 calories ish - and for all the keto goodness in the world it’s providing, if it’s not stopping me feeling massively hungry, or making me feel amazing, that’s a big slice out of my day’s calorie allowance.
I’d rather have a massive dinner with loads of solid food, mayo or whatever or the flexibility to eat something earlier in the day on top…
could you not try black coffee with some stevia?
Just water, black coffee, green tea and occasional black tea. I do have a bag of large salt crystals at work and I occasionally put a couple of salt rocks in my mouth. My stomach still growls and churns some. And there are times when I think I am hungry. But the hunger pains go in waves and when I stay busy I don’t notice them.
I totally agree with you there. Starting to wonder if it’s worth using up the calories in the morning myself! Much rather eat more cheese at dinner and maybe enjoy a fat bomb in the afternoon.
I did think about trying stevia in my black coffee…but that’s kinda led me to my next question…I’ve not really dabbled with sweetener yet, I still can’t get my head around how stevia or erythritol doesn’t raise blood sugar? I figured if I stay away from all sweetener then I won’t get cravings. Have you found it affects you in any way?
I try to stay away from the artificial sweeteners. I have used stevia a few time and it does not trigger craving. But I was not that much of a sweets person before going keto.
