Intermittent Fasting Question

(Barry) #1

I have been trying to skip breakfast to try IF, if I have a bulletproof coffee does that negate my efforts, do I need to cut that out as well?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

It depends on what your goal is. The insulin response to fat is minimal, but it is not zero.

What about drinking your coffee black? Would that work for you?

When I first started fasting, I skipped breakfast. Then, to skip lunch, I had a bulletproof coffee in the morning instead of breakfast. That helped me gain the confidence to then start skipping breakfast and lunch. And then to trying overnight (say, 36 hour) fasts. Then to multiple day fasts.

If what you’re looking for is a confidence booster, then I have found bulletproof coffee works well.

If you’re going for true “fasting” and “autophagy”, then dropping the bulletproof coffee and having black coffee is better. But that can wait, too.

You’re going to get mixed responses on this because people like to bend their mindset to fit what that want something to be, but I’d argue drinking a coffee in the multiple hundreds of calories isn’t skipping a breakfast. It’s simply drinking one.

I think the easiest way to IF is 12:12 overnight. Just time your last meal of the day to end 12 hours before you ‘break fast’ the next morning. Easy peasy.

My experience has been coffee w MCT oil is doable in the am. I’d pop an MCT oil capsule at work to keep my stomach from growling every so often, too. Did nothing to harm the IF mojo. I started with a 16:8 fast. But, cut off eating at 7-8 pm. From there, I went to 18:6, then 20:4, then 23:1. Then 24 on, 24 off. From 24 hours, I went to 36, then 48, etc. Worked my way up to 7 days. Done that twice, and goodness gracious - by the 4th day
I felt like Superman, well, Superwoman really. =) Serious energy booster. And, at 54 years old, I felt better than I did when I was in high school!

The IF practice is wonderous for weight loss, among other things. Absolutely worth it.

If you’re burning your own fat, otherwise, then the fat from butter (and MCT oil, if added) isn’t that big a deal. Probably just means you burn a little less of what you have stored. Regular butter, as opposed to clarified butter/ghee, does have a small bit of other stuff - the “milk solids,” but here we’re really not talking about much at all; you’re not using a pound of butter, are you?

If it’s a question of the bulletproof coffee and nothing more, or else truly “not skipping breakfast,” then I’d say keep on with the bulletproof coffee.

Yes.

Do black coffee or coffee with a small splash of cream. Or tea if that is your thing.

If you add extra fats that can easily total 500 cals. from the recipes I have seen on line, then for me and a lot of others, yes it will negate the effort of skipping a meal because you turned a beverage into a liquid meal.
