Intermittent Fasting - I feel tired, sluggish

(Kellie) #1

I have been doing intermittent fasting for about a week now and I have noticed a sort of “crash” after I eat. My first meal is around noon and after I eat I feel the way I did on a high carb diet - tired, groggy , the like crash feeling. I never got that before on keto when I would snack here and there I always felt great. Even when I have had no carbs for my meals on intermittent fasting I still feel like I could nap

I always feel like that too after I eat, fasting or not… Sometimes it’s an endless cycle of eating and feeling tired and therefore eating more (which is not helpful but I do it anyway)… Sorry I’m no help.

Fasting doesn’t seem to work for everyone. Some people get very tired and cranky. I would guess that you could get used to it eventually.
I drink coffee to suppress my appetite and give me energy until lunch sometimes but I think breakfast is important. Especially if you’re working with other people you probably don’t want to be crabby.

I only like my coffee with heavy cream and I have cut that out now too during fasting and it’s the same effect, doesn’t matter if I have coffee and fast or not I still feel sluggish. The whole waiting till noon is sooooo hard for me :frowning: I mean I usually stop eating at 6 or 7 pm so maybe I need to eat until 8 or something. Iv been eating only twice a day once at noon and once when I get off work at about 6

Why are you still doing it then (no offense)? Why not have a quick easy breakfast for some energy? I’m not sure IF is that great and it’s not for everyone. Especially on the keto diet there’s no reason to go hungry.

To get over a weightloss stall / plateau . I lost 25 pounds but want to loose at least 25 more but it’s hard because I’m like in the normal BMI range so my body is happy with my weight I’m at

I would count your calories for one day and see if you are in a deficit for your weight. May consider heavy lifting and sprints too. Being miserable and skipping breakfast doesn’t sound worth it to me.

It is possible that you are eating too much protein, and not enough fat.

I’ve been trying the same thing - and the hunger just gets to me. I’m at my maintenance weight, so I’m not sure if IF is ever going to work for me. I’ve been doing keto 14 weeks.

For me, eating a hearty breakfast and lunch keeps me energetic and good spirited. I love my 7-hour eating window, but I know the same pattern won’t suit most people’s life style.

I am not sure what that could be. I eat one meal a day at 3pm and I’ve never experienced that before.
The only time I did was when I had chinese for lunch one day, I went home and slept for 6 hours I felt so tired and groggy.

It is strange, I have more energy than I know what to do with but I do things a little differently in that I mix chia seeds (freshly ground), non-fortified nutritional yeast, wheat grass powder, flax seeds (freshly ground) cacao, natural Stevia, shredded coconut and MCT oil into a keto fat bomb (use to put other supps. in them) and eat them when-ever I want whether it be extended fasting, intermittent fasting, if I don’t eat them I will feel the way your describing!

Some times add the above with this recipe

Recommendation for a good multi vitamin?
Seem to be regressing. Any ideas would be great

I shouldn’t say high carb diet more like high carb lifestyle lol

If you must do intermittent fasting, perhaps try moving your eating window ahead? Like if you’re sticking to 16:8, have your first meal at 10 am and your last by 6pm?

I asked the same question. I eat a decent sized meal once/day (mostly some sort of meat - pork or beef) and I feel tired. I never really got an answer, except when I thought I should eat more smaller meals - that eating more often will raise your insulin more times (which i understand) but i don’t want to be tired after i eat

It’s gotten a little better and I feel good during the day when I’m just having my coffee (not hungry or anything)

I have gotten tired occasionally after eating. I have read it is because your body is working overtime digesting the food.
