Can too much intermittent fasting cause me to get kicked out of ketosis if for some reason my body is not ready for it?
Intermittent fasting and ketosis
IF aids ketosis, so no. Too much carbs or protein as well as stress can spike insulin and can drop you out. .

IF is a good kind of stress were as starvation(very low calorie diet) is a bad kind of stress.
What do mean by if your body is not ready?
Not eating will drive the body towards ketosis. Period. There may be other forces (like stress) opposing ketosis, that may be stronger in the short run, but if you don’t eat for a long enough period time, you will enter a state of ketosis. It has nothing to do with the body being “ready”. Ketosis is a physiological response the body uses to meet its energy demands.
I was initially working towards skipping breakfast and eating 2 keto meals of lunch and dinner. But eventually I was able to extend the fast to dinner on about 3-5 days per week… I was still working at not snacking on nuts or something keto which would bring me eating window to 4 hours.
In other words I was working at going longer periods of time and I felt great.
Previous to fasting I was definitely into ketosis. Testing around 1.1 to 1.8.
Initially as I began to fast my readings did go up so I was surprised when they dropped.
I joined a female keto group in September and was guided into ketosis. Eventually I began to IF. The fasting part has only been for maybe the last 6 weeks.
I am one of the unfortunate ladies who haven’t begun to loose any weight yet but I was really beginning to feel good on the fasting. I like the keto diet and want to continue to see if eventually the weight will come off AND feel good.
I cheated on Thanksgiving and on another day about 3 weeks ago and another day (but not to bad). Also I have had more wine since Thanksgiving. Altogether 4-5 glasses since Thanksgiving.
I wrote in my concern to the female keto group and was told I’m probably “not ready” for fasting.
Meaning I have more healing to do.
I did have my hormones checked and they are a little off but not too bad.
I was so discouraged initially when I didn’t loose but decided to keto on and hope I would eventually loose.
As far as stress goes I would say it’s so much better but who knows… I would say that up until September I felt very stressed and for several years before that as I lost my husband and moved…all so stressful.
I’ve been intermittent fasting and eat a lot of protein for past month and my ketones in my urine seem consistent. I don’t have a blood monitor but my hunger is low and continuing to lose fat so seems ok for me. But everyone is unique
LoL kinda jumbled LoL
Are you out of Ketosis or showing low numbers?
Its normal for your numbers to go down as you become fat adapted and your body becomes more efficient.
High numbers after adaption generally occur only during EF and Strenuous Exercise.
Fat loss occurs when there is a deficit of available energy in the diet and the body has to dip into its fat stores, I.E. less calories and/or more exercise.
For fat loss IF/EF Keto WOE adapts the body to use fat as its primary energy source and then causes a energy deficit resulting in stored body fat loss.

Most consider below 0.2 to be negligible ketosis and 0.5 or higher to be the goal for nutritional ketosis through carbohydrate and/or protein restriction. So at 0.3 or 0.4 you are in ketosis but you may want to seek ways to boost your level a little. Maybe through strictness with diet such as cutting out the wine or other incidental carbs when low. Or maybe focus on improving sleep, reducing stress, better activity/exercise, etc. Or don’t worry about perfection and be satisfied that you are doing ok.
Thank you Todd
I know one thing for sure is The more comfortable and easy IF got for me the better I felt.
I agree, I do need to stay strictly keto too.
Now to just get through Christmas!
What they may have meant by “your body not being ready” to fast is to let it come naturally. Meaning, if you are starving and counting down the seconds until your eating window starts, you may want to wait until you just don’t feel hungry until later in the day. It comes with time. No need to white knuckle it through a fast and make yourself miserable. Also, fasting is not required, but some (including myself) find it a useful tool.
