Intentional irony?

#1

I was reading a news release today by Diabetes Canada (they just rebranded their name from Canadian Diabetes Association) and made other organizational changes. I also saw that their toll free telephone number is 1-800-BANTING
How ironic. The therapeutic aide to reverse and control the disease is embedded in their telephone number! Coincidence?

I’m never sure with these organizations that have “diabetes” in their names whether they’re pro- or anti- diabetes.

It seems that many of them are more interested in “managing” it than reversing it. Chronic illness is far more profitable than wellness.

Oh dear, I hate these sort of rebrandings. It happens all the time in the UK also. All the marketing people are reading from the same hymn sheet.

So we now have “Health England” instead of (probably) “The English Health Agency” (or whatever). Etc, etc, etc. I prefer old fashioned and “boring” names of agencies etc, which just say exactly what they do. (It’s true the the role of an organisation can evolve over time, and then a name change may be appropriate, but the “style” of all these names always seems the same…presumably meant to sound “cool” or something, but to me it feels as stale as cold porridge.

As for “Banting”, Gary Taubes wrote in GCBC that the Banting who discovered insulin was distantly related to the William Banting of “Corpulence” fame (in the 1860s). However, I don’t know for sure if Gary got that right. (I mean I’ve seen no independent evidence of it).

Yeah, that’s exactly the point I’m making. Dr Banting was a Canadian, who discovered insulin, won Nobel prize and so on. So, my guess that is why it’s embedded in the telephone number (a bit of Canadian pride and nationalism happening). The irony however is that Wm Banting (the British undertaker) was the guy who was made famous through his low carb diet, which helps to reverse several metabolic diseases, including diabetes.

Right, gotcha now. Yes, the irony is rather exquisite.

managing it keeps everyone employed.
