Insulin levels

Started doing carnivore on August 1. Down 20 lbs but the greatest thing is that my fasting BS is now around 90 with meds. Halved my dosage of glimiperide and things are still doing well. I have scheduled bloodwork in November and can’t wait to see my A1C. My last one was 9.8 so I should be a little better off.

While looking at my old bloodwork, I noticed my fasting insulin was 29.5 uIU/ml which said High. The report says that the acceptable ranges are 2.6-24.9 uIU/ml.

My question is this, with continued weight loss and blood sugar control, is it probably that those insulin numbers will drop into normal ranges and if so, does that signify a reversal of insulin resistance or controlled insulin resistance? I guess my main question is that that range seems to be pretty large so what would be the optimal number to wish/shoot for?

Maybe a newbie question but I couldn’t find anything that expressly dealt with it. If you have a link, please share it as well.

Thanks

Good going thus far, Jaimie. :slightly_smiling_face: 29.5 insulin is indeed high, but I have to believe that things are now going in the right direction for you.

Yes, it is very probable that your fasting insulin will decline, and that is improving insulin sensitivity/decreasing insulin resistance. Weight loss alone usually helps insulin sensitivity.

Indeed, the “normal” range of 2+ to <25 is enormous, and it bugs me. Somewhere around 14 or higher and it makes weight loss extremely hard; the body is in ‘fat storage mode’ rather than ‘fat burning mode.’ For most of us, the lower the insulin number, the better. I think a lot of people do pretty well down around 5, and would be super-happy at 3 or a bit lower.
