One of the benefits for me of eating this way besides weight loss and good blood glucose control is that of reduced inflammation in my gut. I know that proper balance of my gut biome is important to my overall health. My question is can inflammation cause you not to lose weight? Bonus points if you know if any articles /studies about this issue. Thanks.
Inflammation
@DeniseArneson sorry for the brief reply! I wasn’t able to post in more detail.
A lot of autoimmne issues and inflammation are caused by high gut permeability, too. There’s a lot of research on it. When I can pause and breathe I will post more.
Hi! I just read Dr David Perlmutter’s Brain Maker on this very topic and loved it. May be worth a read for you. Good luck!
I’ve been wondering if the reason people on keto go through periods of losing size without losing scale weight is because of inflammation reduction. I’ll have to read the article! Thanks for posting.
Care should be taken when considering this research. The principal author is the creator of the Zone diet and has substantial vested interests in this area of research.
Yeah, I wouldn’t go following the Zone diet. I read the article first… and in that case anyway a lot of the information is not necessarily inaccurate. Sears is a biochemist by trade, and while I consider him a dork, his science is not always terrible. I have always disagreed with his low fat pushing (I think he embraces this chiefly because it makes his schtick unique-ish), however his diet does reduce a lot of food items that are inflammatory.
Having said that, I think that inflammation can cause a lack of weight loss indirectly. I don’t think it’s the inflammation itself, so much as the causative factors which create it to begin with. Three big causes of inflammation are: blood glucose, insulin, and autoimmunity. Diet plays a big factor in instigating these states. Part of why any very low carb diet based on whole foods is successful at eliminating inflammation is because 1) it reduces blood glucose and serum insulin over time, and 2) it also reduces consumption of foods that might provoke inflammatory responses. Plant foods cause issues for a wide variety of individuals, for instance.
Me as well. I can now tell when a food causes me gut inflammation. Just another benfir of eating his way.
It’s hard to tell. May also be a correlational effect where we also gain lean muscle mass, too.
What are some of the symptoms that you experience when your gut is inflammed?
Well when it’s really bad left quadrant pain , symptoms of diverticulitis, pain and pressure in my large intestine, diarrhea , bowl movements that are loose and really smelly ( sorry but you asked) generally my intestinal tract is off. Now it hadn’t gotten that bad since I’ve stopped eating wheat , sugar and legumes. I’ve noticed mild pain and a general feeling of unease that I associate when things aren’t right. I compare it to other times like right now when I’m experiencing no distress to the point that I’m not feeling anything unusual going on. My gut feels light if that makes any sense, normal. I would get occasional mild reactions since going on this WOE but it hasn’t been until I went in a really restrictive diet of bacon , eggs, avocados , olives, greens and good fats that I haven’t experienced any symptoms. When I had both dairy and nuts over the holidays the mild symptoms returned. I went years with IBS this WOE has been so good for me, keto for life.
I started Keto 10 days ago and the first thing I noticed was no more pain in my knees and feet. I’m loving the Keto life!!!
I definitely noticed symptoms of lowered inflammation on keto: looser joints, improved skin, and I could finally raise the thermostat above 61. I’ve been burning all over for so long that I could only go outside in the summertime from one hour before dawn to about nine or ten in the morning, then I had to stay indoors or it would feel like a fever. I’m looking forward to seeing if that’s improved next season, I sure hope so.
Yep, you are not alone. Same thing happened to me, too. It took longer, but miraculously, the pain went away.
Yes, the pain and stiffness in my knees, hips and shoulder went away almost immediately. It’s now six months later and it seems that the stiffness has returned. That feeling of needing to “walk out” stiffness after sitting for an hour is back. I am hoping that it is weather related, lots of precipitation here in the northeast recently. I also did not lose weight this month, though I’m being complimented for getting smaller. I wonder if the stiffness is caused by “die off” of inflammation in the fat cells?
