Inflammation when starting keto

(Ginger Rust) #1

I’ve recently started doing keto. Love the energy, but not the inflammation in the knee. What is causing it and what is best for it… Thanks!!!

To the best of my knowledge, Keto helps inflammation. I’d say give it more time and make sure your macros are good (carbs under 20g/day) as well as your electrolytes.

Inflammation is mostly caused from seed oils and the trans fats, so are you consuming them?
Soyoil, canola oil, corn oil, and the like. These guys are hidden every where like store bought mayo, dressings, all kinds of things. Read the labels.

It took me about 2 weeks to cure most of my bad inflammation, I was very gouty. The other thing is that keto is a mostly catabolic state, so you going to trigger the repair functions that are under that hormonal spectrum, I don’t recollect my inflammation getting worse but it was really bad. In the first few weeks I would make sure you are eating a decent amount of protein if you have issues like this your body will use it.
Also some medications will not help, as they may block the repair pathways.

Just a thought and maybe not the case with you but dairy causes inflammation for me. Blocks up my head and sinuses and inflames my intestinal tract (above and beyond the standard lactose intolerance).

@Spice11 - Increased inflammation is unusual, based on many reports of the opposite. Phinney and Volek speak to the mechanism for reduced inflammation in their books and speeches. My experience is a dramatic reduction of arthritis of an old sports injury after 30 years.

Given your situation is unusual, it would be helpful to know more about the nature of your inflammation – did it just start, do you have an old injury, what foods are you eating, etc.?

I’ve had Lyme disease. So I’ve had inflammation for awhile. But Lyme is now gone. Still working on immune system. I’m new to keto, only been doing it for 2 weeks. Absolutely love the energy. And i finally feel fat loss, yay.!! I also need to watch dairy. So I feel I’ve been pretty cautious so far. I’ve also been trying to ease into yoga and walking and that’s when I first felt the swollen knee. It was starting to feel better and I ate some pork rinds with a vodka diet ginger mule. Next morning… swelling back. I’ve been eating more eggs than normal. So I’m wondering if that could also be the reason.
