My gf started doing keto. Yet I am concerned for her, before this she did low carb but also low calories and gym for the last 2 weeks. She lost 25 kg but has another 15 kg to go. Once I insisted quite vehemently to eat more fats and proteins before going to the gym.
Finally she is giving keto a try after I constantly explained to her the science of keto.
But my concern now is that her BMR is low, she renounced counting calories. Dose the BMR increase on a keto diet with eat as much fat as you like ?
What advice should I give her overall ? I mean I talk with her a lot about what food she should eat. She is eating more and more like me.
Increasing BMR after Caloric restriction
According to Stephen Phinney as you reach the desired weight your fat consumption within your correct calories might increase because you no longer have fat to burn, but I would suggest that she just eat to satiety.
I wouldn’t expect a BMR to lower unless she has lost actual lean body mass as it is the primary driver in overall BMR burn in your body. So I would get a DEXA, BodPod, InBody or some other test to find out what body fat is to better establish the actual BMR and TDEE she would need to lose, maintain or gain.
Without the proper facts it is all a large guessing game and is impossible to tell you the right info.
Has she had her BMR/RMR tested to see what it actually is? It may be worth checking into it.
I’ve been tracking food and exercise for a year and stepping on a Renpho smart scale every morning since last September. I believe my BMR has increased, from age adjusted 1430 to almost 1700 calories. May be part of the reason is aproximately 10 pounds of muscle added in the past year. That leaves 15 more pounds to go, hopefully at a steady pound a month.
This is not quite the standard keto advice. Standard keto is eat fat to satiety which is different to “as much as you like”. Understanding satiety is a key learning point in the keto journey.
But to your key question, how to rebuild metabolism that may have been lowered by undereating. I think that eating keto to satiety will rebuild metabolism but it might take some time. Some weight training would help as well.
And remember that when doing this, weight loss may be very limited. She may even gain weight.
