Impact of keto adaptation on sleep patterns

sleep

Hello,

I have been keto-adapted for almost half a year, consume less than 50 g of carbohydrates per day, and enjoy all the benefits of a ketogenic lifestyle.

However, I have noticed one aspect that I don’t find ideal and that seems to need optimization. Specifically, I often wake up after only 5 to 6 hours of sleep (before keto adaptation I slept 7–8 hours) and can’t fall back asleep. At the same time, I don’t feel like getting up, so I end up lying there for another 1–2 hours in a kind of twilight sleep.

Has anyone here had similar experiences? What can I do about it?

Best regards

For many that never goes away when you’re constantly in ketosis. It’s a handful of the negatives for many of us, not all, but it’s hardly rare either. I used to screw myself out of a lot of sleep regularly so I didn’t catch it for a while.

Sleep is literally the most important thing we can do, as is optimizing it. When I started tracking sleep it became real clear my deep sleep was garbage, and my REM was far from perfect. When I switched to a TKD/CKD hybrid and more carbs were coming in, it immediately resolved.

First thing is when you wake up do you have to pee? Keto has a diuretic effect so many times that makes it worse and targeting electroyltes can help there.

Easy test would be to have some carbs before bed, if you sleep through the night then, you’re part of that club. Doesn’t mean crap carbs, go for starchy not sugary. The reality is you’re not eating enough carbs to top your glycogen back off, top your muscles off, and then start spilling over with 1 meal. May want to find a line that works for you if the initial test shows that you sleep better.

Quality sleep is mandatory for health and longevity, caring about the amount of ketones you’re making at any given time isn’t.
