IIFYM - KETO Done Wrong!

(Full Metal KETO AF) #1

So to pull up an often inflammatory topic in KETO, I was watching Ken Berry MD on YouTube this afternoon and this popped up. “IIFYM” or “If It Fits Your Macros” is basically often referred to as “Dirty KETO”. IIFYM is a leftover from one of the calorie restriction diets with a “points” type of system. Sorry, I never did those so I can’t tell you which one.

As many of you know my focus is on healthy KETO choices. I occasionally eat sausages with questionable ingredients like Dextrose, and things that I don’t even know what they are. But mainly I eat as clean as my budget allows with over 95% of that being single item ingredients that I cook with. My focus getting into KETO was recovering from a developing health crisis, diabetes. I have been through a lot with my body, as many of you know.

Weight loss is great, but it’s only a part of being healthy. It fact it doesn’t even compare to being healthy, your most valuable and fleeting possession. :cowboy_hat_face:

Thank you for posting this! The video reminds me of how much I was beholden to sugar before starting keto. I want to keep the sugar demons at bay as long as possible.

Very well said!! :sunglasses:

It seems like a lot of people on this forum love Dr.Ken Berry but I looked him up under physicians and he has a verrrrry low rating amongst real life patients… they say he is a horrid doctor (maybe why he begs for money on all his videos…) if he was a really successful doctor one would think he would not have to do this…

I’m surprised! I just went to look him up and I saw 31 excellent, 1very good, 3 good and 7 poor. It was a small sample but mostly positive.
I suppose if you go to him wanting drugs you might be disappointed!

My doctor never gives drugs out very easily at all, but he also didn’t figure out my hubby had Parkinson’s or a few other things that we found out via emergency hospital visits (like when my hubby passed out and fell down the stairs, and cracked his head, and I called for an ambulance)…and it is hard to find family doctors…

There are a lot of reasons different people will love or hate their doctor for.

The thing is people who don’t like something are much more likely to register a negative review. I know this from myself because it’s the only times I have bothered to open up my Yelp app just to write a review, and one of them was about an ass of a doctor. For many people I can see that his recommended course of action if that’s KETO and cutting out carbs and sugar to cure diabetes, that might not be what someone wants to hear. How many times have you gone to the site you mentioned or another like it to rave about how much you like your doctor?

He asks for donations if people wish to give any to help fund the videos of which he produces several per month. He sells no products. I think that’s completely reasonable if someone who was helped, and has the generosity and is inspired to help with the spread of the information wanting to give back. :cowboy_hat_face:

After reading some terrible, negative online reviews for restaurants that I love and frequent (or at least have frequented in the past before I started cooking most of my meals at home), I find myself pretty skeptical about the motives of some online reviewers. Similarly, I’m skeptical about some of the positive reviews for some products on Amazon. I think you still have to use your own judgement regarding the validity and sincerity of some online reviewers.

Have a :purple_heart:.

I’m out of likes again, damnit!

Okay, fair enough… I just watched a bunch of his vids and was wondering if he was really a doctor so looked him up and saw a lot of bad stuff but if you saw good stuff, that is good. =)

Dr. Berry is an MD and practices family medicine in Tennessee. I think he serves plenty of patients from a more socio-economically challenged population. I think he speaks in a down to earth and practical fashion in order to relate to his patients. Some people seem to find it annoying.

This is likely the reason for his bad reviews.
@Momof5, you’re in Canada so prob aren’t familiar with some regions of USA; the area he is in is a high poverty, low education, high opioid use, part of TN. I’ve done field work in Eastern KY (similar demographic) and speak from boots on ground knowledge.

Ohhh okay,

@DiMo and @BlueViolet

Thanks for explaining, that clarifies his style and how he comes across to me a lot better. Reminds me of the people that went to @Beefcake’s garage sale… totally makes sense now =).

HA yes now you get it
