iHealth BG5 - Warning

Ok, so let me be clear, this is a case of operator error. The BG5 actually seems to work fine.

A month or so ago, I began using the BG5 instead of my Precision Xtra to measure blood glucose, just because it was a little cheaper for test strips. Well, for the past month, my blood glucose has been around 110mg/dl - where before that it was consistently 70-ish in the mornings. To make a long story short, I read the vial of test strips my BG5 came with and it turns out the strips are rated from 113-170mg/dl! So I ordered glucose strips for my Precision Xtra and tested back to back. Precision Xtra - 70mg/dl. BG5 - 110mg/dl.

Seems pretty obvious, buy maybe someone else can learn from my mistake.

This is interesting to know. I just checked my vial of One Touch Ultra test strips. It says Control Range 119-159. I need to research that but my fasting blood glucose is typically in the 80’s with these strips so they are producing an out of control range reading.

Let us know what you find.

Ok, so the control range is for use with a control solution so that you can check the accuracy of your meter and strips. It is not what I initially worried which was that I was supposed to be buying test strips in a certain range for my typical numbers. Glad I misunderstood, that would’ve been royally dumb. Here is an article I found in case anyone is interested in getting some solution and testing their meter and strips.
