My wife and I became ketonians two months ago. Our why for doing this is plenty big enough to make this a life style for life.
I am 60 and my wife is 56. This is not a diet to us.
My first fast was for 90 hours in the second week. We both did a fast the third week for 90 hours.
Now we do 24 hours between meals ( IF )
and once a week we do ( EF ) 72 to 90 hours.
We have done this every week. Sometimes it was
Amazing, sometimes it was harder then have teeth pulled without Novocain.
Our question is, and please give us the science, our we really messing with our metabolism too much?
IF combined with EF
Fasting is great for metabolism.
Calorie Restriction is hard on metabolism.
The worst thing for metabolism is to overeat carbs while restricting calories.
Read Dr. Fung’s fasting book.
It goes over the details.
We are not restricting calories but we are eating only one meal a day with 24 hours between them, dinner.
Then every week we are doing EF for 70 to 90 hours.
Will this type of cycle reck havoc on our metabolism?
Thanks for the comment.
According to Dr. Fung, the answer is NO. In fact, he believes this is a healthy part of a balanced lifestyle of eating. He suggests that your refeeds be extremely healthy and packed with REAL foods, no processed foods, healthy fats and NO CALORIE restriction. In other words, don’t count calories but eat until you are nice and full and satisfied. If for any reason you feel like you need extra calories, get them from bacon and macadamia nuts, eggs advocados.
One more thing that Dr. Fung suggests is to do a 3 day fast every other week and do IF daily in a 16:8 or 20:4 whichever your preference. So I believe that you may be following his exact protocol without even realizing it.
Eating once a day does in it’s own way restrict calories just because it’s hard to overeat on only one meal a day. But trust me, it is still possible to get alot of good healthy food in that one BIG meal. You are doing a great job. I hope you are seeing the benefits. Good Luck
Have never read that book and you are the second person to mention it. The type of fasting we have been doing just felt right so we do it. I am going to read this book. Thanks
I read and understand but need to ask, if sometimes it is easy & sometimes it’s like pulling teeth, surely on these latter occasions your body doesn’t want it at that particular time, it may have needs unknown, so why extend past the point of comfort? Go with a more natural rhythm.
I have taken your advice. I have not forced a fast instead I have held off until my body in it’s own way said let’s fast. So yesterday at 7pm I felt it was time. I will fast for 3 days and see how it goes.
I really hope it goes smoothly and painlessly for you. I just did my first 23 hours so am only a baby as I have just been doing 18:6 it felt as if I could have gone on but I am out tonight and didn’t want to eat something not Keto so have eaten first. Next time I will try to plan ahead, this just happened naturally, feels amazing.
The fast went great. It was so natural that I just moved into it with no effort and ended it 90 hours later. Now about the ending it, I really try not to do stupid, but this time I jumped into the deep end of stupid. My wife and I broke the fast with our version of fat head pizza:pizza:. 2 to 3 inches thick of meat, fat , and veggies . For 2 days we felt like we had been run over by a truck in the gut area. This just proves that this is science but common sense also plays a big part as well.
