I would like to conduct a simple polling question

What is your blood type? The background for this is that my sports scientist friend has shared many insights about keto over the last 15 years. His research, based on approximately 50 athletic patients/clients, indicates that there appears to be a certain blood type that those who have it thrive on keto right from the start. No keto flu and are super responders with regards to weight loss. Keep in mind that weight loss for these patients was not the primary goal but rather a secondary goal. Those patients of this particular blood type lost on average 2.3 lbs per week and achieved a goal weight in a short period of time. 10-15% of body weight. I will share the blood type once I have some responses. What have been your experiences when starting keto?

(Doug) #2

A- (A negative) and my experience is right in line with those numbers. 60 lbs/27 kg in 5 months, ~2.7 lbs per week, 17-18% of my body weight.

ā€˜Keto flu’ - none to speak of. I had been a horrendous carb eater, but was also used to eating once per day. Coffee in the morning, a big meal in the evening. I was also scared by a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, and very soon the feeling of ā€˜doing something good for myself’ and ā€œturning the ship around,ā€ overwhelmed any misgivings or discomfort.

It was not even ā€œhardā€ to do it, and it sure made a difference.

O+ here. Don’t recall any keto flu and so far it’s working just fine. Be very interested to hear the results.

A+ for me, I did loss weight quickly and don’t remember any keto flu that slowed me down. But I couldn’t stick with the super low carbs. I am doing my best with a moderately low carbs diet of all natural real food, no fast food, no soft drinks. And I have to keep my fat intake and salt intake to a moderate level.

(Ethan) #5

B-. I found keto easy and lost so much weight that I started getting nervous. I ate 4 lbs of trail mix just to make sure that i could still make my weight go up a few pounds if I wanted to.

A+. Keto worked quickly and easily for me, no keto flu. Still eating ketovore 4 years later. Female but I’ve always tended to take off weight and put on muscle without undue difficulty. 35 lb / 25% body weight lost, 20% in the first year. Been at or below my highschool graduation weight for 2.5 years now.

One odd thing I’ve noticed is that although I am very low carb and sometimes zero carb, and that feels right, once in a while I go off plan and it’s a good thing. Example, I’ve been sliding into feeling rather worn down and irritable in the last week or two. Went out to lunch yesterday and had a beer. Now obviously that ā€œcheered me upā€ a bit, but what I notice is that today I am back to a normal mood and more energy. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t suffering from an alcohol deficiency, haha, so I’m crediting the carbs or maybe the B vitamins in the beer for rebalancing me. I could probably chalk this up to other things, but it’s been a consistent pattern. I don’t need that boost often, more than once in a fortnight and I’ve got the carbohydrate blues, but the occasional ear of corn, sweet potato, beer, perhaps an overage of nuts seems to be of value.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #7

Blood type: A+
Weight loss: 80 lbs./36.4 kg over 6 months (3.3 lbs./wk.)
Percentage: 26.3% of starting weight
Keto ā€œfluā€: none, because I heeded Phinney’s advice to keep my salt intake up (and it stopped my migraines, too)

Phinney and Volek say their data show that the usual loss among their research subjects is around 20 % of starting weight, so I consider myself lucky, even though I could stand to lose another 80 lbs./36 kg. I’ve never heard Phinney talk about blood type, however.

I never exercised during the period of fat loss, either, except for the normal effort involved in cleaning out my mother’s apartment after her death and getting ready for the movers to take me from New York to Connecticut, and most of the fat loss seemed to occur after that, anyway. I really loved not needing to count calories and never needing to go hungry, which is what prevented me from succeeding at previous attempts to lose weight.

O+ blood type.

#9

A+, not lost much but only minor keto flu…I am a woman of a certain age though & not been able to do much exercise…

(Central Florida Bob ) #10

O+ Been Keto since April '15. Lost about 65, gained back about 10, and bounce around in that range. I would not consider it easy loss - it took a few years. Like many or most here, I’ve been fighting that ā€œbattle of the bulgeā€ for a long time and I think that’s probably the biggest issue people have.

(Bill) #11

O- here

(Peter - Don't Fear the Fat ) #12

B- I found keto easy to adapt to with no ā€˜Keto Flu’. Fat loss worked a treat. Most of my targets were achieved in 3 months.
20kg lost and diabetes reversed,

(Bob M) #13

AB+ here. Don’t think I ever had the keto flu, the multiple times I started Atkins and then transitioned for good to Atkins. Lost weight (went from 43 inch pants to 34 inch pants) but gained weight after shoulder surgery and trying a very high saturated fat diet. Lost the most weight initially, slowly losing weight now. Will be 11 years of keto on 1/1/25.

Not that close to what I was when I was 17-20, but I was also much more muscular back then.

(Germaine M Schweibinz) #14

I am A-, I got the Keto flu when I started. I have been KETO 2018. Germaine

(Edith) #15

O+ here. I had terrible keto flu when I started and have had trouble balancing my ketones the entire time I’ve been very low carb. Recently, I upped my carbs. I’m probably around 50-74 most days, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. I am feeling much better, sleep is better, heart palpitations are much improved. My body is feeling less stressed overall.

(Cecil Mc Gregor) #16

AB+ here. The only problem I had with Keto was the worst constipation
in my life. In 3 months, I went from 192 lbs to 160 lbs. This was too much.
I was feeling weak and dizzy, so I backed off to 170 lbs and feel much
better.

I started keto because I was pre-diabetic and wanted to discover
the supposed brain advantages of keto. I’m out of the prediabetic
range, but, so far, I haven’t noticed brain changes.
claimed advantages. My energy level is still low.

(Robin) #17

Welcome!
Can you tell us more about what ā€œbrain advantagesā€ you hoped for?
And I’m assuming your constipation issue resolved…?

Also to help us understand and perhaps make suggestions…
how long have you been eating keto, what is a normal day’s menu look like, do you know how many carbs and calories?

Glad you’re here. Look forward to your input.

(Jane) #18

O-

I don’t recall any keto flu, but I started out low carb ala Atkins before a friend turned me onto keto and this forum. Weight came off fairly easy and steady.

(Tracy) #19

B+ here, no keto flu and only takes me about two days to adapt to it. Did do it for health reasons and weight loss. Have lost 18% of my body weight in 16 weeks (if my calculations are correct, my brain is a bit fried :sob:). Gone from 86kg to 70kg. But if I remember correctly B+ is not the blood group you are referring too.

(Geoffrey) #20

A negative but I don’t want to share my experiences until I hear your more about this study.
