I want to keep doing keto BUT

(Samantha J Ross) #1

This is TMI, I’m sorry, but I’m so constipated. I don’t know what to do. I’ve been getting more fiber and taking a supplement, cutting back on fat because my body doesn’t digest it well but when I cut back on fat I get hungry and irritable. I drink coffee and it only sometimes helps. I don’t want to rely on stimulants that make you go because it’s not healthy to do it for long periods of time. When I first started keto it wasn’t as bad but now it’s getting worse and worse. I only go like once a week if I’m lucky. I’m miserable. I feel gross when I eat carbs but at least I am able to go. Don’t know which is worse. Anybody deal with this? Or have any suggestions on how to manage it? Please and thanks!

Type constipation in the search box. There’s s thread about enough salt. And magneusim citrate.

Definitely sounds like you may need to supplement with Magnesium. Are you drinking enough water? Probiotics may help with the digestion issue?

(Garry (Canada)) #4

Some people are more susceptible to constipation than others.
My wife and I can eat the same foods and I’m fine whereas her stool is like concrete.
I would suggest eating a mixed lettuce with spinach salad each day. It’s both limited carbs and good for you.
Best of luck.

I agree with Garry. Spinach usually does the trick for me. It hasn’t failed me yet and does a good job cleaning out my plumbing.

Colace aka docs ate is a softener, not a stimulant laxative. It’s generally considered very gentle. If you’re not using it often, you won’t build any tolerance. Always take it with water or simi l ar, like tea,

Couple of suggestions although I usually have the opposite problem, especially on Sad.

Psyllium fiber (in metamucil but Trader Joe’s carries a good one cheap). I get pure not mixed with anything. Then you could try Konjac root capsules sold under the brand PGX

Then the general recommendation to drink more and check your magnesium intake

Keeping up on magnesium should do the trick, MCT oil is VERY effective but if your not used to it start slow.

I eat salad almost daily. Maybe not enough spinach. My doc said to stop eating raw vegetables but even when I do it makes no difference. I’m gonna look into getting more magnesium. Thanks guys!

Sautee the spinach in a pan with some olive oil, add a little salt and at the end…squeeze a little fresh lemon juice on top. Problem solved! No raw veggies, per docs orders.

Might be that you need LESS fiber. It blocks some people up.

(Zoe ) #12

I agree with Allie, maybe you need to try less fiber. It can make things worse for people. Maybe try cutting down by 20% for the next 5 days plus water. If the fat helps you feel full eat more too.

I find that I sometimes block up. I find more water helps. Tea or other hot drinks even more. Sparkling water is great and if you really want to try to get it moving try warm sparkling water- just stay near a toilet!

I find more liquid and then going for a walk or other gentle movement also helps. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Another option perhaps
Try cabbage. ( maybe in a broth of some sort )
Wipes me out literally

Cabbage is good. Mag citrate liquid is dirt cheap and quick. I use it mixed with sparkling water as a supplement but if I get too much it works its magic pretty quickly.

Of course MCT oil can do the same but I wouldn’t recommend too much of that stuff. I actually thought I had a stomach bug once but it was just MCT; I was miserable.
