I tried carbs again

(Ryan Tuttle) #1

So i thought id share my experience eating regular chinese food this afternoon. I decided awhile ago that i would still eat carbs on special occasions. Today I went through a lot of work to save myself from paying a 1,400 dollar school bill so i decided it was celebration worthy.

So i ordered chinese food. We started eating about an hour ago and I had significantly less than what i would have normally consumed.

I had half of a small boneless spare ribs, and a few crab rangoons, chicken fingers, scallion pancakes and duck sauce. This is the first time since starting keto that ive eaten this way.

In the past this would have been pretty normal. Actually normally i would have eaten until it was all gone but today there are left overs. Today i stopped eating because i started feeling so awful. (Also this meal was shared between 3 people)

Im shocked by how completely terrible i feel right now. I know its anecdotal and that i sound dramatic but wow. I have a severe headache. My mood is terrible. (Before i ate i felt amazing) My mind feels foggy and i feel lethargic. Even my vision feels a little blurry. I feel swollen and bloated and my stomach is severely distended.

My initial motivation for keto-ing was my improved mental clarity and mental health and of course losing weight isnt so bad either.

I wonder if ive just forgotten how awful i used to feel. Or if its some sort of rebound from not eating carbs. Idk. But i feel like i never want to eat like that again.

I wish i had paid more attention to the quantities of food just for personal information. Im going to observe my weight, mental state, and urine ketones over the next few days. Today i actually weighed in at 170.8 (which was a new low for me).

I started eating around 5:30 and finished around 6:30pm. Just a note to myself for later

Gotta love MSG

After a bath in epson salts at 7:58pm i noticed my mood has improved substantially and the headache has decreased. I also decided to weigh myself so i can compare to the AM. I weigh 171.6LB.

Holy crap, I used to love those things dipped in that sweet and sour sauce that was so radioactive red, it probably gave off a glow. There’s gotta be a keto recipe for the crab filling, maybe I could wrap it in cabbage?

PS: Sorry about your stomach, dude. Hey, at least now you know and knowing’s half the battle. That’s what G.I. Joe says, anyway.

You could use actual crab, cream cheese, chives and wrap it in chicken skins. Or just do the cream cheese and chive in chicken skin.

Some one posted this recipe for crab rangoon the other day and it uses mozzarella cheese as the wrap:
Ingredients-
8 oz. Cream Cheese
4 oz. Crab Meat
4 oz. Butter
3 oz. Green Onions (diced)
Pink Hoax Salt, or Sea Salt (optional)
Each “wrap” is ¼ Cup Mozzarella
Filling-
Melt butter in medium sauce pan on low/medium, then add green onions, Crab meat, and Salt (opt). Stir frequently and let it cook down. Once cooked down, put on low, and put in cream cheese and cover. In a few minutes uncover turn off heat and stir the crap out of it…
(makes roughly 9 wraps worth of filling)
Wraps-
Preheat oven to 375
Cover cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Arrange ÂĽ cup each of Mozzarella into Squares on the parchment paper. Put in oven and watch closely, they will try and get all weird shaped on you, pull em out every now and again and reshape with a spatula.
Once they are starting to brown, pull out of oven TURN OFF OVEN. Take a spatula and separate from parchment carefully so they aren’t’ sticking.
Rangoons-
While wraps are still warm. Place 2 Tbsp of the filling in the center and fold carefully corner to corner. Take a fork and press down on the edges to form the wrap. Let cool…. EAT THEM!!!

We ate at PF Changs about a month ago. While I know there were probably things I should not eat, we got the gluten free beef and broccoli, a couple of other dishes that do not have breading. I honestly felt ok but we were still sort of keto

There is a recipe I have been desperate to try and it does wrap in cabbage leaves

I suppose you skipped the fried icecream and bread rolls too

That’s what I do - order the best option available and leave the mashed potato on the plate!

Deep fried in a kale leaf sound yum!

HOLY MOTHER OF–!

You people are destroying my fasting plans.

Chicken-skin crab Rangoon! That sounds amazing. I’m going to have to make that.

9/16 at 6:30 AM i have zero urine ketones and a weigh in at 170.4LB. Which is another new all time low.

Sounds like what happens with some people who have successfully tried “Carb Nite”.

(Ryan Tuttle) #14

9/16 11:00am. I weighed 171.4 Lb. I was expecting to put on a load of water weight but apparently not.

Zero urine ketones.

I havnt eaten anything due to just not being hungry. I also felt extremely groggy and light sensitive all morning. And i have a headache. I feel bloated still.

I did have a little bit of half decaf coffee with a splash of cream.

I’m really appreciating how good i feel on keto now.

OMG, those look awesome. Going to try them after my no dairy experiment I am doing to battle a sinus condition.

I am definitely going to give these a try next weekend.

wondering about MSG as well. that is a very very toxic substance that is often used in large quantities in chinese take out.

(Ryan Tuttle) #18

I forgot to reply with my last update. It took about 4 days for my urine ketones to appear and my brain to go back to my normal energetic state.

I also seem to be eating a lot more lately than i was before my chinese meal. All of it is keto of course.

The holy grail, keto crab rangoons! They look so good will def be making this week. Thanks so much

I read Ketofast by Dr Mercola. He advocates carb cycling on a regular basis (not sure he means full on Chinese! :grinning:) to achieve maximum metabolic flexibility. I guess in the same way we went through keto flu diving in, whenever we dive out we feel the adverse effects. Sounds like you had a bit of a shock to the system. Maybe cycling a bit could help.
I cheat once in a while, if I could never have Chinese, Indian and Thai food again, that would be unthinkable!
Thanks
