I remember when I thought this was healthy

Before beginning keto I didn’t know about all the hidden sugars and how things break down in your body and I actually used to think granola bars were healthy

oh yea…I thought a ton of products were oh so healthy when I did calorie restriction and starved my butt down the scale…I remember the good old…um, horrible old days HAHA

throw the words whole grain on products and they sell well…so many think a ‘whole’ grain will save ya…yikes!

I thought the same. Now I can’t un-know how bad some things I once considered healthy are! When I go visit my mum and she’s having bagels with low fat mayo & low fat cheese… for a healthy lunch. Low fat cheese!!! So much wrong with that ‘food’

LOL. Me, too. I picked up a box of Nature Valley Granola Bars the other day when I was in Walgreens to look at the carb count. And shuddered.

I loved the crunchy ones, which were getting harder to find back when I ate them. Seems the chewy, chocolate ones were taking over.

…wait a minute not so fast!

You could definitely keto a couple bars of that but that would be it for the day especially if your trying to initiate or bump the body into ketosis and you could also have a couple of eggs and bacon on the side with an avocado too…

I could fully engage in a granola bar bashing debate but we must be sensible also…Lol

[1] ”…To find out just how much sugar you can eat on the keto diet, we asked Brittanie Volk, PhD, RD, senior clinical and patient engagement specialist at Virta Health, for answers:

“To achieve the many health benefits that a ketogenic diet has to offer, one needs to consume only the amount of carbohydrates that the individual can tolerate to stay in nutritional ketosis,” she told POPSUGAR. "This amount differs from person to person but is generally less than 50 grams of total carbohydrates per day. That means all sources of carbohydrate, including refined sugar, should be limited to as little as possible to avoid the impact carbohydrates can have on blood sugar and insulin levels."

So while sugar is a carb and does count toward your 50 grams or less a day, you should still limit sugar intake so as not to spike your blood sugar. Yes, you can still have it, but make sure that sugar, combined with all your other sources of carbohydrates, stays below your threshold of about 50 grams a day. …More

I don’t think that’s true for everyone or all approaches to keto. I couldn’t/shouldn’t have that much actual sugar. It would for sure mess with my progress as anything more than a few grams of sugar kicks me into cravings for more. I was addicted to sugar and 11g of it in one sitting Is too much for me.

You know I always wondered why they have to put so much sugar in the food?

To keep us addicted probably?

So sad :slightly_frowning_face:

I did not mean to bash granola bars I was simply stating from my perspective how I truly thought that was a healthy snack. In my opinion and of course this is only my opinion I cannot eat granola bars because it escalate into other carbohydrates then I want regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt and then I would want some pineapple because my thing was I used to eat granola and pineapple together. So for me personally it’s best for me to stay away from granola until I get a handle on my food addiction

(Karla Sykes) #9

That was exactly my perspective when I wrote this post. I don’t know you know some people say you can eat whatever you want on keto as long as you keep your carbs and not certain ratio but for me certain carbs trigger other unhealthy Behavior. For example, I know this is going to sound weird but when I start eating more sugar I then don’t want to exercise. And I know you may say to yourself that has absolutely nothing to do with it but it is true for me eating unhealthy escalate into other unhealthy behaviors

Well it’s not just the sugar (2nd ingredient behind oats on the one I looked at). The third ingredient was canola oil.

For me, it’s not so much the carb count as the food type. For instance, a normal weekend brunch for me is a couple of slices of bacon, 2 or 3 eggs and some cheese, and I’m full until dinner. But, mix up some chaffles, and just the act of biting into something that’s kind of sandwich-like makes me hungry for more. It’s a shame, as I like the idea of being able to eat a sandwich occasionally without having to worry with a lettuce wrap.

Oh, I remember those! I think there was a peanut butter one I always ate…during the fat free craze in the late 80’s/early 90’s I used to eat Tootsie Rolls by the bag full because…they were FAT FREE after all!!!:smirk: That was during my Susan Powder exercise phase…good grief…
