I made it back

In mid July we were financially forced off the keto track, and I am glad to be back. Allow me to explain:

During the second week of July, my oldest son (15) made some seriously stupid choices that sent him into diabetic ketoacidosis (he has type 1). He was in the hospital for a week, and we missed work. A few days later, the husband also spent a week in the hospital. More work missed. And then more work missed while recovering continued at home. During all of this, we also suddenly needed a new transmission and alternator in our only car. Not cool when there are 5 kids that need to be places.

After pulling from our meager savings, we still had to ask for help with our basic bills for July and August. With 7 of us, despite careful planning, our freezer stash of food disappeared. We said a tearful goodbye to keto (seriously, I cried) and embraced the carbage from a local food pantry at the beginning of August. Even with that, by the end of August I’d mostly been forced to stop eating, so there would be enough peanut butter sandwiches and ramen or mac n cheese for the kids.

And then yesterday the husband had his 1 year job review. The recent missed work aside, they are super happy with him. And SURPRISE! Here’s a $$$ bonus!

Y’all, I bought so much meat last night! So much butter. So much cheese. And veggies, because I missed fresh veggies. I made steak and broccoli with a parmesan cheese sauce.

I’m probably going to revisit the keto flu, but that’s okay. I’m having to push back my Ireland trip until 2020, but that’s okay. I’m going to feel well again. My shoulders and knees will stop hurting and my feet won’t be swollen anymore, so it’s all okay.

Sorry for the length. No one in my real life knows how bad it really got, so I needed to share.

I’m really sorry to hear about the pile on of things your family went through, and admire how you’re back on the train. Enjoy the meat! :cut_of_meat::meat_on_bone::bacon::fork_and_knife:

You have a huge amount of tenacity. KCKO!

Thank you.

And to add to my list of grievances, I missed Ketofest. :rage: :sob: I was so excited. I love road trips. Maybe next year.

Welcome back, sister. :grinning:
We all go through rough patches. You’re not the only one. Don’t feel alone. What a blessing to have your family through all this and you have each other. Ireland will always be there too. It’s a great place to visit.
