I’m too weak in social situations

(Carrie) #1

I’ve had a run of social events over this week and I’ve lost the willpower, peer pressure and awkward situations has got to me and I’m off the wagon :pensive:.
My weight has increased, my tummy feels bloated, yuk.
I was fat adapted, 14 weeks keto, lost 14lb, steady progress.
I need to get back to it ASAP
Do you think it’s going to take me as long again to get back to that stage? It was at about 8 weeks that I started to feel good, that feels like a long way off for me now…
Regretting being so weak now!!!
All that work, trashed in a week :weary:

Thank you
Well said

The body is a remarkable thing and whilst everyone’s bodies respond differently, you know you can do this - you already have. So get back on it, you’ve got this!

It is not trashed. Keep calm. If you fast, do a fast, this is the quickest and easiest way of getting rid of this bloated feeling. Trust me, I know, done it a few too many times.

Just get back to keto foods right now, and remember this feeling. It’s the feeling you don’t want to repeat.

Falling off the wagon is a very common experience: life happens, and sometimes keto gets in the way. Just remember what makes you feel good in the long term.

Thank you, what do you suggest? A 24hr fast? Or maybe just some broth for 24 hrs

What I was doing before was:

Breakfast creamy coffee
Lunch big with fatty meat and veg
Nothing else til breakfast

One meal a day, I was losing 1lb a week.

Any advice please

Simply go back to this regime. It clearly works for you. Do not panic, do not despair, do not think that all is lost. You have had a bump (maybe a large one!) in the road. You know what you need to do. KCKO.

Thank you, great advice

My tactic for avoiding temptation at social events is eating before I go. At the event, I will make a small plate and nibble but if someone asks why I’m not eating the food on my plate, I tell them “this is my second serving”. That is if I don’t feel like telling them that I can’t eat sugar and starch.

Look at it as an experiment. You were just confirming that processed foods are still bad for you. Just get back to eating the way that makes your body feel good. Eating food that is good for you, 51 out 52 weeks in a row, is a far cry better than you used to eat. It’s not the end of your ketogenic road… it’s merely a speed bump.

Same, same, and same. What I’m doing is that I’m getting rid of the temptations in my house until I’m stronger. I’m not putting myself in situations (except for work - I sit at a desk INSIDE a commissary kitchen for a catering company) that would tempt me for a while. I’m gonna fast for a bit.

You’ve got this. A set back is not good, but it’s much better than giving up.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #11

A variation that I learned in a different context is, for the first half of the event, just say “Oh, not right now, thanks,” and then halfway through switch to, “Oh, no more, thanks.”

I always question my self about discipline, yeah I cheated so what, I already have it planned out and resume keto friendly foods, I do not let anything else discourage or distract me from my normal way of eating…

When you fall off the wagon for a long time, your metabolism always remembers what you did before when you were restricting carbohydrates like the firmware on a computer chip (believe it or not; what the research says) so it makes it more difficult to start the process of burning actual body fat all over again.

What do you do about it?

Never start off with 20 grams of carbohydrates, start with 200 and work your way down in 50% increments weekly (but also include the meat and fat.) i.e. at a rate of three meals per day don’t start off doing two meals a day or one meal a day like OMAD.

When you exercise do short 5 minute burst type exercising like HIIT for 15 or 20 minutes day broken up into resting periods and no more than that because it lowers (esp. with higher protein intake) ghrelin signaling (your hunger hormone).

The reason you want to do this is to trick your metabolism into thinking it is always full (leptin) so it does not go into fat storage survival mode, that’s what will happen when you try to re-keto too fast with that huge gap in time.

I have other ways burning fat much faster than with the above method through self-experimentation (by purposely making myself fat) but I’m still not sure if it is too hard on the body.

Mix it up, OMAD is not the best route for those losing weight, you don’t want your metabolism to take a hit. Do intermittent fasting for a few days then do a 24 hr. and then go back to intermittent. 16/8 or 18/6 are usually doable for anyone. The main thing is to eat enough fat to not get overly hungry and go off plan again.

Good luck sorting it all out.

So - one week to reverse the “damage” - one week to get back to where you were when you let other people somehow mind-control you, and then back on course. At the worst, a 2-week setback in a what is a lifelong journey. 6 months from now you won’t even remember it.

It takes time to learn how to say no to yourself and others…that was the hardest part for me. Now you know how that made you feel and next time you will set boundaries and stick to them. I’ve been on keto for a year and sometimes I still feel bad when I refuse food at someone’s house. I have put on some big girl pants for restaurants and Im slowly learning how to maneuver and attack some situations. We are all human, we make mistakes, we let ourselves down with the choices we make, but as long as you learn from it and KCKO, it’ll be over before you know it

This and This

And that’s all I got

Good Luck
