After a few weeks on the keto train, my affinity for great beer is the only thing that has me second-guessing. I don’t crave sweet sugar, but I crave my fermented sugars. No flu, no energy dips, and already dropping lbs, so I’m happy. And my favorite beer styles are certainly high-carb, big sweet stouts and hoppy AF IPAs. Anyone have experience with mixing in your faves (whether it’s beer/cake/etc) and maintaining your keto momentum? Tips or advice?
I LOVE craft beer
Hey MadDogg, I have a long history of loving quality beers and also have a strong preference for the ales. I also was a home brewer and have spent about 3 grand in brewing equipment over the last few years so that was something I had to consider before doing keto.
I’ve only been keto for about 2 months now but I’m already getting ready to sell my brewing equipment. The benefits from keto are just too important to me now. I’m 47 but I used to feel like I was in my 60’s. Couldn’t sleep through the night, joint pains, back pains, (insert body part here) pains! In just 2 short months I literally feel better than I did in my 30’s.
What has helped me was to realize a lot of my “bad habits” were a combination of carb cravings along with rituals that I’ve grown used to. I knew carb cravings start to fade the more you avoid them so I have been working on changing my habits to more keto friendly ones.
I also have the benefit of never being very fond of alcohol. I love the taste of beer but if it was possible to make good tasting alcohol free beer I’d have been doing that. Thankfully that helps me not have much desire to move to more keto friendly adult beverages. (I do like a gin and tonic though)
I don’t know if I have any advice to offer you other than to say the carb cravings will lessen and to look for ways that work for you to get over your habits for beer. I can also offer a sympathetic ear and letting you know I totally understand your craving for the liquid bread.
So - I too love great beer (tho IPA’s do not fit that category). Since I have started the diet (May 15th) - I have not craved beer whatsoever… nor other carby things, it’s been great. from listening to podcasts, to reading, and to being involved in these forums, Ive come to this conclusion.
Get yourself set on the Keto diet - 6 months or so of doing it right. Then if you are at an event or whatever occasion, a beer or carby food is easier to recover from. Enjoy your pleasures in limited quantity and then right back at keto. Since you are now fat adapted, it’s easy to get back to ketosis if you enjoy a guilty pleasure occasionally.
in the meantime, enjoy yourself some scotch, bourbon, or whatever liquor you fancy as they are zero carbs (but as with anything moderation is still key)
Maybe before you sell your kit, you could play around with perfecting a low carb recipe? There aren’t many on the market, but those that exist are incredibly popular!!
I have transferred my love of craft beers to the wonderful world of Bourbon and Scotch. I know you said you’re not particularly fond of alcohol, so maybe not a solution for you, but it works for me. I don’t drink often, and I don’t drink much, but I drink well.
