Hi! I need help. I’m on the Ketogenic diet and have lost 11 lbs. But i’m Getting frustrated with the lack of things to eat. I can only have 16g of carbs a day. So i’ve Been eating a bunch of meat, which in turn makes me eat too much protein. I love vegetables but the list is limited. I can only eat so much lettuce. I can’t just eat a stick of butter either. I don’t know what to eat. Some days I do ok without eating much but then other days I feel like I’m starving. I don’t know what to do.
I don’t know what to eat
What do you eat currently?
This seems like you’re over thinking this whole keto thing.
Have you looked at the what did you keto today thread?
Eat meat. If this is how you’re eating now, you’ll never reach “too much protein”. Meat’s got the best and most bioavailable micronutrients you’ll be able to get. I agree with the butter sentiment. You can hit macros with vegetable oil and SPAM, but you won’t be healthy by any means.
Are you trying for 16g net or total carbs? There are plenty of vegetables you can eat if you’re going net for sure.
There are tons of things to eat. Google Keto recipes and have fun!!! i just found a recipe for Keto pralines that Im going to try out.
Basically think of your favorite recipe before keto and adapt it. Do you like pasta? Make your favorite pasta dish but replace the noodles with zoodles!
I think a big thing with making Keto a life style change (and also the make sure you dont get bored with your food) is to enjoy cooking or learn to enjoy cooking.
Thank you for your help. The Keto calculator has me eating 16g net carbs, which I’ve remained under but I’m only allowed 64g of protein and 80g of fat. I’m trying to incorporate cauliflower into lots of things because it seems to be relatively low in carbs. I do eat some asparagus, avocado, and lots and lots of lettuce. I’ll admit I’m partially paranoid about the numbers. I just don’t want to get burnt out on the things I can eat so I was looking for alternatives. I hear people saying you can eat as much as you want. But I find that is totally not true. Because it seems like everything you stick in your mouth is either a carb or a protein. I’m not complaining because I am losing weight, not rapidly but consistently. I’m happy with that. I just want to be able to maintain this. I just get frustrated on days where I seem to be extra hungry.
The 2 Keto Dudes podcast has recipes at the end of every episode.
Dr. Berg offers so many recipes I haven’t been able to get to them all. Google Dr. Berg
Try coconut butter, coconut oil and ghee for cooking.
Make some homemade mayo, sauces and dressings to add flavor and fat to anything you like
I personally eat an entire avocado everyday. I have eggs in a hundred different ways. Cheese, more cheese, lots of cheese including on my green veggies
The world of keto recipes is vast and growing
Be bold
Have fun
Don’t obsess over the numbers too much
I hope this was helpful
Keep calm and keto on
Veggies are Limited? Are you kidding me? If you limit yourself to leafy greens to lettuce, yeah, it will get boring. My friend, you need to open your plate to new things. There is a big world out there. Here is a list of veggies I eat:
Artichoke
Arugula
Avocado
Beet greens
Bok choy
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
Cabbage
Capers
Cauliflower
Celery
Chiles (@rustyk61 would say not to forget the jalapenos)
Chinese broccoli
Collard greens
Cucumbers
Dandelion
Endive
Fermented veggies (Kimchi, Sauerkraut, Pickles)
Fresh herbs (Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Oregano, Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, etc.)
Garlic
Jicama
Kale
Leek
Lettuce (different varieties)
Mustard greens
Napa cabbage
Onions
Peppers
Radicchio
Spinach
Sprouts (many varieties)
String beans
Swiss chard
Tomatillo
Tomato
Watercress
Keto has opened my world of eating vegetables that I had never eaten before. This isn’t even nearly a complete list of healthy, nutritious Keto veggies. Before keto, a typical salad for me was lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. Cooked veggies were limited mostly to carrots, corn, potatoes, string beans and peas. But now, I eat a lot of different veggies and stay away from the starchy ones. I now get so much enjoyment from cooking and eating. Also, I eat until I am full and I am losing weight.
I make very delicious salads that would make Dr. Berg proud. For cooked veggies, I usually steam them, and add a Tbsp of butter (you do not have to eat a whole stick), salt, and a little lemon or lime juice or ACV. Delicious!
You may not have a taste for everything on this list but I suggest you try different veggies and see what you like and how you can use them to enhance your meals and nurture your body. Don’t eat so much lettuce. It is good for you but it will get boring if you eat it often. As I have shown, there are a lot of veggies to enjoy. Keto is anything but limiting when it comes to available food choices.
You can eat 20 g of carbs per day (regardless what a Keto calculator says).
This probably means you are not eating enough fat. Eat fatty portions of protein (bacon, pork belly, fatty cuts of beef). Lean meats are ok but make sure you add fat with it. You can add melted butter to meats and EVOO to salads.
Just as my suggestion with veggies, I suggest you try different varieties of proteins and healthy fats.
