I did it and it wasn’t even good

I absolutely am not proud of myself. Have done so good! I even gave up the low carb bread. All things went better!

Things changed and I made a terrible decision to eat a biscuit at Cracker Barrel! I used to love them! It wasn’t even good. Doughy and gross. My fish, broccoli and greens were amazing!

Somehow I am still in ketosis. Cooking out pork belly and stuff on the grill tomorrow.

Was it worth it? No.

Ha ha. I’ve had a similar thing myself: recently I was wearing a CGM and wanted to know what different foods would do to my blood glucose. As part of that I had a very high carb meal having been strict keto for a year prior. Home made burger with 45 day aged fatty beef that I ground myself, brioche bun, dressed salad, salt and pepper fries, battered onion rings and ketchup. Burger was great, didn’t notice the bun, hated the fries, the ketchup was too sweet and the onion rings were meh. No desire to repeat that experiment.

I’ve heard people talk about being kicked out of ketosis but, certainly for me, it didn’t happen (n=1). Despite >200g of carbs my blood glucose had a modest spike and quickly came down, my ketone level dipped a bit but didn’t disappear. I did also have a couple of glasses of wine with the meal which would have suppressed the spike somewhat, but even so, I was surprised.

But, and it is a big but for me, I felt lousy for a few hours after the meal and into the next day, despite my blood glucose level/ketones being “keto”.

Thanks y’all! I just feel so guilty. To sabotage myself . I am only in for the real thing a couple of months. Low carb and low calories or anything has been my life until I was very active at work where I could just eat anything and stay pretty much the same. But I had thyroid face and pants too tight. Thyroid face is real by the way.

Anyway… I didn’t gain all my weight back after the one biscuit. Will I do it again? I so want to go back into sourdough baking. Need a new hobby. Ha! Thanks again.

I am immune to guiltiness because of a simple thing as eating but you shouldn’t feel it either. It happens, it’s okay, you may even learn that nope, it doesn’t worth it and be calm next time instead of potentially having a tiny voice tempting you to eat the biscuit…

I used to immensely enjoy my off days (they were everything from mere low-carb to high-carb). After having many close to or totally carnivore days things changed so now I only have a handful of carby or carbier items I still enjoy. The other quickly disappear as it’s no good deal to eat something that has a disadvantage due to being carby but no advantage at all (except not holding back when my rebellious self gets hopeful)… If I go off, I eat something extremely delicious or otherwise enjoyable (I like crunch and juiciness) No regrets then

You didn’t like the biscuit so you didn’t eat much of it. It’s very normal not to leave keto then. It doesn’t matter how carby an item is, if you eat a tiny enough amount (and your other items matter too), you won’t get thrown out of ketosis.
But if you do? You go back easily, no big deal. Sure, don’t do this too often (whatever it means for you) but it it happens sometimes, it probably don’t do much harm. Anyway, if you can’t avoid it or it’s in the past already, no use to worry about it. Draw conclusions, maybe be more determined - but as you didn’t enjoy the biscuit, it’s not even so hard (or shouldn’t be. I know the type of compulsion when we must eat something we don’t even like so much… that’s bad).

I can relate. I use a piece of my previous bread dough but baking bread is amazing and rewarding, I did it today  I am lucky as my SO eats high-carb and loves bread. So I just bake it.
But I make recipes on keto too and they are fun too (as long as I don’t go overboard with zillion variations). I haven’t even stopped to make new recipes on carnivore though it’s so rare that I am really glad I cook for a high-carber too… (A not choosy one who eats high-fat as well, it wouldn’t be so great otherwise.)
Apropos biscuits. I can do many things, not crunchy biscuits. I couldn’t ever even do it with flour (when I started, decades after cooking and baking bread, I already couldn’t bring myself to use much flour. and eggs don’t do crunchy, apparently) let alone a carnivore version but I won’t lose… I am close. It must be cheesy as my options are limited but it’s fine…

By the way… I can eat bread if I want. A single off day doesn’t do much to me. But most people don’t like to go off keto a lot. Hey, even I don’t want to do this anymore as I finally found a keto version where I get some benefits. Usually. I know carby days aren’t for me but a single one here and there? Feels great. So it’s not impossible to eat sourdough bread now and then if it’s THAT important for you… I personally don’t like carby breads, my most carby one has eggs and oily seeds and pure gluten galore so it actually satiates me. A normal bread has zero satiation effect on me due to its low protein content. I eat bread all alone or with butter, typically…
There are keto breads too but I dislike them. If I can’t put wheat flour into my bread, I rather just eat my 100% egg sponge cakes, work very well in the role of bread… Keto breads can be shaped though so if you are into that part in bread making… I like making little roses and braided things but keto breads were so disappointing that I dropped them. But they are fine for others.
And indeed, you can get a new hobby, there are interesting keto dishes. When I went low-carb, keto, tried out carnivore, I don’t only lost dishes, I gained some too, eventually.

Everything is a learning experience. You now have a memory of what carbs taste like with your new palate. Save that memory and use it to resist the next temptation .

My guess would be that your liver stopped making ketones for a while, which would explain the dip. But because you were in glucose-burning mode (the point of inhibiting ketogenesis is to clear out the excess glucose from all that carbohydrate), you weren’t consuming ketones, either. Hence the dip, but not a complete absence of ketones.

How about jerking meat and making sausage as a hobby?

 The eternal teenager in me is laughing.

Yep, making sausage is nice too  Not nearly as challenging as making bread but it has lots of advantages. And variations I suppose though I stopped at my first idea and that was already good enough. Baked goods are more fun. Of course, they are an option on keto too.

(Robin) #10

You beat me to it, Doug!(see what I did there?)

(Marianne) #11

Don’t beat yourself up over this. We all do the best we can in the moment. The positive thing is you didn’t find it worth it.

Get your mind out of the gutter!:rofl::rofl:

(But I never even noticed. Thanks for point out the laugh, I needed it!)

Yes I need a healthy hobby! Going out for Valentine’s Day meal. A #1 Steak house!!! Not gonna eat the amazing rolls! I hope they have oysters… yeah not great for carbs… but less than bread!!

Thank y’all soooo much!fliers in Memphis

(Doug) #15

To be serious - jerk chicken, jerk pork, jerk beef - YUM !!

(Denise) #16

I feel the same way about trying the Keto bread. It just doesn’t appeal to my taste-buds anymore, thank God.
