Hypothyroidism And keto

(Chelsea Barnett) #1

Okay so I did some searching on this forum for this but i figured I would start my own post to ask specific questions.
I got my mom to join keto with me. She is on day 5. She is eating strictly under 20 carbs a day. She is not dping IF yet but I told her not to worry because she will get to that point. She isn’t counting macros. Just focusing on low carb for now. She hasn’t Lost a pound yet and she is getting discouraged.
Can having a hypo thyroid cause problems with keto?
She also says she is bloating very bad.
She has been off of her meds for a while, just got back on them not even 2 weeks ago. Can this make her stall ?
Or is it too early for her to be expecting any weight loss ? I figured she would be in ketosis by now.

She is feeling like quitting and waiting to start back once her meds get in her system good but I would hate for her to give up her 5 days.
Advice from any fellow keto people with an underactive thyroid??

Thanks. I was hoping I could find info on others who were off their meds or waiting to get meds regulated. But I’ll check these out.

I’ve been keto for almost two years now. After a little more than a year in, I started getting thyroid pain and was initially diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis, but now the doctor is thinking it may be hashimoto’s, despite negative antibodies tests. I started at 50mcg levo, now at 75 for the last two months with TSH levels stabilizing towards the normal range (2-ish, don’t remember exact number) with a wait and see in another month. I lost 50 or so lbs that first year, but have put about 30 back on since this all started. Trying to get the weight back down I’ve been carnivore for the past two weeks, ketones have gone from averaging 0.5 doing keto to 1.2 steady doing carnivore, and my weight has maintained steady. Kind of frustrating, as I was hoping cutting all carbs would kickstart the weight loss again, but I’m happy that I’m not gaining anymore.

Point is that from my short time hypo, i’ve learned it sucks if you want to lose any weight. Good luck.

@Chellyyy093, I have been hypothyroid for 20 years (at least), and on medication for all of that time. I started keto 8 weeks ago; have been losing weight but not as fast as some. I don’t think being keto is harmful to folks who are hypothyroid; there are a number of folks who have been keto’ing for a long time and some of them have found that they now require less medication than before keto.

Also, for some people, it can take weeks to be fully fat adapted, and 5 days isn’t much time at all. She needs to be drinking plenty of water and making sure she is getting enough sodium, potassium, and magnesium. I am not a Dr, but I don’t see the harm of staying on keto while she gets back on her thyroid medication.

and @Tmdlkwd has posted some excellent resources.
