Hypothyroid and High Trigs

(Jodi) #1

My Husband is 64 yo very fit (looks like he is 50yo), takes no medication and we have been Keto for 3 years. Each year we get annual blood tests just to make sure everything is running smooth. This year just happened to get a FULL set of labs for him. We were shocked when is Trigs came back and Thyroid abnormal.

Trigs= 380!!! the last 2 years they have been 60
HDL= 49 (last year 64)
LDL=291

TSH= 6.45 (never had this tested before)
T4 free=0.96

CRp=0.9
A1c=5,4
Homocysteine=11.7

I know there is a link bewtween cholesterol and thyroid function. Anyone have some insight? He had been intermittent fasting ( 20-4) for about 2 weeks before his lab work. Could this of caused an issue with cholestrol and thyroid results?

Low thyroid is worth investigating on its own right. Determine whether it’s just hypo or maybe Hashimoto’s. Also, should get a T3 test and monitor it while your thyroid medication is getting balanced.

I hope hubby doesn’t mind blood draws, because ramping to the right dose of levothyroxine can take many months.

I know thyroid can jack with your LDL. Trigs are usually carb related.

Check out www.cholesterolcode.com. There is a way you can eat during the week before the blood is drawn that will help produce numbers that don’t freak out the doctors. It’s also important for some reason to fast between 12 and 14 hours before the blood is taken, as well. I’m not up on the reasoning, but from various posts I’ve read, it affects the numbers negatively if you fast for too short or too long a period beforehand.

We tend to think that lipid numbers are pretty stable over time, but Dave Feldman (the genius behind the Cholesterol Code) has shown that cholesterol and triglyceride numbers are actually pretty volatile. He has a number of videoed lectures that explain all this, so I won’t attempt to. Look for those videos on his site and on the LCDU YouTube channel.

It also may be of comfort to know that the researchers Uffe Ravnskov and David Diamond have been calling the whole cholesterol-causes-heart-disease hypothesis into serious question. They have also documented the misleading statistical manipulations of the data that statin manufacturers use to justify foisting their products on people.

Just a note re thyroid meds. I spent ten years on levothyroxine. I switched to nature-throid and felt much better. I would consider starting with bio-identical if you do go for meds.

Where do you get your natural medications? I’m on levo and would rather not be.

My dad uses Armour pig thyroid, because he can’t tolerate Synthroid.
