Husband versus Wife plus Keto

When you’ve seen the light it is very heard to watch someone you love kill themselves! My husband of 40 years, although thin and active, was slowing down and stressing out at age 71… My response was to research every aspect and nudge him toward the glories of Bio-Hacking and away from the Xanax, Zoloft, Flomax, Metropolol, Lipitor and Low Fat diet his doctor insisted on. Yes, he had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I signed us both up for Calcium Scans, which he very reluctantly agreed to.
His score came back at 2182. A walking coronary!!

Dr. Davis of Wheat Belly fame says even scores this high can be managed but my husbands doctor freaked out (so did I to be honest). We were in Sweden on holiday when he began to get Angina attacks, (was it related to knowing the problem existed? Dunno…)

.By the time we return to the US, he was ready for the next step. The CAC score was in August. The Cardiac Catheterization in Sept. confirmed 3 Arteries were 90 to 93% clogged. We scheduled bypass surgery after the holidays, ,January 9th 2019.

Well…he came through the surgery like a miracle with no pain and no setbacks. Everyone has been amazed at his recovery and, yes, while I had control he was ketogenic.

BUT NOW he has started Cardiac Rehab where every session at the gym ends with a half hour movie and discussion about the Heart Healthy Diet, He also has had many follow up doctors appointments where the need for Statins is pushed. This last time the Cardiologist, when told by my husband that he had many sideeffects with statins, recomended an injectable PCK2 inhibitor.

I see him bending to the pressures. I mean this stuff is scary!

I coulds use some advice…

Thanks in advance

I would probably be doing what you’re doing, eating keto. But it’s hard if someone is really scared by their doctor into doing the opposite thing. I know it fixed my blood work in a few months but he’d have to take a leap of faith to go against doctors orders, but then again it doesn’t sound like the doctor was doing much good for him anyway. I hope he gets better no matter what his choice is. :cowboy_hat_face:

Thank you David. I suppose, because he never really suffered from anything overt it is harder for him to believe dietary changes helped.

Oh man, I don’t know if I have any good advice… I know for a fact nagging him won’t work (and after 40 years of marriage I’m sure you know that too  ). Did you ask him if he’d watch some videos by keto experts-doctors just to see what he thinks? And he’s totally against it? Or to read some testimonials by other people with you? There are so many stories out there of people healing their diseases by keto.:heart:

And I hope his health improves, whatever he does, I wish you both the best through it!

I keep trying to play podcasts on the topic while we are driving! Ha! THAT goes over like a lead balloon. See he isn’t diabetic (H1AC 5.2), not overweight 142 lbs, no outward problems other than slow digestion that has been corrected with HCl and pepsin with meals. He definitely does suffer from stress which would probably go away if we could just stay away from doctors!

Mel, would he consider eating a whole food diet to start, or a moderate/low carb diet to start? Maybe once he has the taste for it and feels good doing it he’ll be motivated in his own way and for his own reasons (the only motivation that works). If someone got me to do keto and I was against it in the beginning I would be a convert simply because of all of the other benefits I get from ditching the carb junk. It’s hard to make a change based on advice, but easier to if you can feel it for yourself.

Also, do you prepare the food for the both of you?

Hi Peta, Actually he does most of the cooking now that he is feeling good. And he is feeling GREAT these past few days once he processed the doctors visit and decided to ignore it! I took bread and wheat products out of the kitchen years ago and his starch of choice is potatoes…but he cooks mostly Indian which usually comes with a side of rice. Actually he’s never eaten much and I just want him to drive down the triglycerides because of the heart disease. I did send him some articles about Statins and small LDL with some positive Keto stuff and he did read everything. SOOOO maybe…
