My husband finally joined me on keto and lost 12 pounds in the first two weeks. I handle our food so I know what he’s eating, but the last week he just started gaining 1/2 to a pound a day. He’s only lost a net of 5 pounds now over 3 weeks. His ratios are 70/20/10 and he rarely even gets 20carbs a day. In addition, he bicycles 3-4 times a week for 20 miles. We are both so frustrated! Oh, he had a rue en y about 15 years ago. Can’t seem to find information on keto after bariatric surgery.
Husband steadily gaining weight after 3 weeks on keto
I’m unclear whether you’re saying 70% fat, 20% protein and 10% carbs. 10% is double my daily allotment. I count TOTAL carbs, not net. I am in the 4% - 5% range for carbs.
I love exercise, and do so six times a week, but if you’re just starting a new way of life, it can dramatically add complexity and hunger. It’s not a “slam-dunk” for weight-loss.
No doubt, I can empathize. If it weren’t for my monthly visits to Dr. Westman, who has corrected my dietary regimen repeatedly, I would have been off this WoE a long time ago.
I don’t know what this means.
My advice is to find someone you can work with directly, review your meals, walk you through your menu plan, and so on. This forum is good, but not all advice here is legit, including mine.
- Heal Clinics is one option,
- Diet Doctor, a keto-friendly site, also has resources.
- Read Dr. Westman’s update to the Atkins Diet, or
- Dr. Ken Berry’s Lies My Doctor Told Me,
- and so on.
This is more than weight-loss, this is actual healthy eating. We’ve been fed a lot of garbage about what’s healthy and what isn’t. The “detoxing” isn’t just in the cupboards.
Best wishes to you and your husband!
Hard to say without a sample diet, I’ll agree with @Screenack on the carbs though 10% is relative to the amount he’s eating daily. 3-4 20mi bike rides is a pretty descent trip, is he getting in what he needs calorically to make up for that? This isn’t quite as simple as calories in vs out, but if he’s not eating enough to compensate for that then you wind up at a severe caloric deficit which will stall you every time. It’s just as important to eat ENOUGH as it is not to eat to much!
It’s a guess but I would think that anyone cycling 80 miles a week is bound to be building muscle. Perhaps that is off-setting the weight-loss. Has he measured his waist-line, noticed increased muscle size?
For myself and my diet partner, around week 3-4 we both had 8 days of weight gain. We quickly switched to carnivore on day 4 and still 4 more days of weight gain. On day 8 we started an electrolyte supplement (see below) and the very next day we both lost weight. Im female, he is male and we both seemed to have the exact same experience which was weird.
Anecdotal evidence at best but - try increasing electrolytes?
The weight gain from the 8 day streak was lost fairly quickly in 1 to 3 days.

Advice from anyone who’s had bariatric surgery: husband has regained almost entire initial weight loss at 4 weeks
The electrolytes worked! He’s on his way back down! Thanks for the advice. I knew it had to be water.
