Just watched several videos by Dr. Ken Berry about carnivore. He said getting Omega 3 Fatty Acid is important and also eating organ meat. I don’t like or eat any kind of fish, except shrimp (and I don’t even eat that much). In addition, I have never had a piece of organ meat and don’t care to. Could I take a fish oil supplement and at least get something? What about the vitamins/minerals that organ meats supply? Any other sources?
How to supplement nutrients when you don't eat/like certain foods
I believe the consensus among long-time carnivores is that organ meats are not essential.
The main concern with ω-3 fatty acids, at least as I understand it, is that they and the ω-6 compete for the same receptors on the walls of cells. So if you are getting a large quantity of ω-6 and not much ω-3, there is a risk that the ω-3 will be “crowded out” by the ω-6. Ω-6 fatty acids also cause systemic inflammation when over-consumed.
Part of the solution is to avoid industrial seed oils. Even the fruit oils have a lot of ω-6, though far less than the seed oils, so it’s a good idea to stick to animal fats, with their much lower polyunsaturated content. While ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids are essential in the diet, the needed quantity is not large. Given that during our evolutionary history, many individuals have had no access to seafood (as measured by bone isotope analyses) and yet they seem to have thrived, I’m not sure how much we have to work to make sure we get enough of these essential fatty acids.
As Dr. Phinney says, the big challenge with ω-6 fatty acids in the modern world is not getting enough, it’s avoiding getting too much. Given how much ω-6 is in soybean oil, for instance, it would be impossible to get a matching amount of ω-3, whether in food or as supplements. My guess is that it’s better to work on reducing ω-6 than it is to worry about getting more ω-3. But that’s just a guess, so don’t quote me.
Coffee Carnivore, here. I’ve been taking a large spoonful (approx. 2.5 teaspoons) of Carlson Cod Liver Oil every morning just before my coffee. It has almost zero fish flavor to the point I don’t even taste it (Seriously!) and doesn’t cause the fish oil burps that capsules do, for some reason. Waaay cheaper, too, when you do the math. Highly recommend. Refrigerate after opening.
I feel better after seeing this. I don’t consume any seed oils and only use ghee or animal fats. Thanks, Paul!
Do you think maybe it would be good to take a fish oil pill once a day, just for good measure?
Thank you for this! That was my main fear about taking a fish oil capsule. I will see if I can pick this up on Amazon.
yea I feel you on ‘thinking you need’ but meat, seafood fish and fowl gives all we require.
in that we are OFF plants that rob, so our absorption and requires of what the ‘old standard BS info’ out there ‘says you need’, ya don’t need it to that level
Key being it is simple to get more easily for that TAD of a jump you ‘think ya need’ ----------from the net: Omega 3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatories. Inflammation plays a role in many diseases, and chronic inflammation is associated with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, ulcerative colitis, and other conditions. Omega 3 fatty acids slow down the production of the inflammatory response.
There are three main types of omega 3 fatty acids:
- Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
- Eicosatetraenoic acid (EHA)
It is primarily ALA, prevalent in grasses, that provides omega 3 fatty acids to grass fed beef. DHA, perhaps the most critical of the omega 3 fatty acids, is also found in meat and dairy products from grass raised cattle. DHA is a key component of the brain and retina. EHA is found mainly in fatty fish.
Shrimp does have omega-3. Shrimp is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids.
SO THINK MEAT SOURCE vs. some ol’ supps in a jar
If you just buy a few packs of grass fed something and then just eat a few more shrimp in your week or just put that money into REAL food then you are doing yourself SUCH a better source of nutrition.
Grab some grass fed dairy products, again, they are a tad higher in what you are seeking, very small simple add to your intake and cheaper than hounding downs tons of GF pricey meat all the time.
You don’t require every day tons to UP your wants on omega 3s or ?? that you desire…you just source a bit more in your weekly eating to shoot for that uptake you think ya need.
Don’t fall into the extra bunk…in that someone like Dr K absolutely knows we require good omega 3 and all and he reports on it and gives ideas of organs and more to supp for that…but there are other ways and easier ways…better food sources, not every day to kill the wallet, not all the time to meet some phantom increase to some unknown number of intake that means nothing, JUST friggin’ eat great
don’t be sucking down a fish oil pill to just burp up that nasty stuff…find ALL YOU require from your food…your actual plate to eat and I know you easily can
I’ve been using it for years. I’ve noticed, though, that quite often the bottle arrives with a dented metal cap. They just can’t seem to get their act together regarding packaging. The contents have not been affected thus far and returns are a hassle, so just prepare yourself for a potentially misshapen top and proceed as normal.
There is a person I follow on Twitter. She eats no fish, yet she has a very good O3/O6 ratio. But I believe she eats a lot of grass-fed, grass-finished animals.
If you’re on Twitter, she goes by at AnnChildersMD. Replace the “at” with the symbol.
She posted her test results, and described what she ate.
I’m relatively social media illiterate. The only thing I do is FB - no instagram, twitter, snapchat, etc. I think if I had kids to show me, it would be a different story. I’m not one to click around and experiment with technology.
It’s mostly true for me as well but I eat pork. Pork may have a very bad omega 6 : omega 3 ratio but it depends and I have no idea what my pork is like…
I simply ignore this and hope for the best as I can’t supplement things, I hate it, forget it and basically never feel the need. It’s probably not a good attitude but I hardly will change it. It’s my life I am interested enough to visit threads about it though. Especially on carnivore.
I eat organs, it’s something. But very close to zero fish, I would eat more if the fatty fishes would be more available and cheap… The same with ruminant meat…
I heard about carnivores living on pork so it’s possible for some time but we are interested in longer term health I think…
Wow you do more than I then I use FB for chat but I don’t have a FB account myself. And I had, for work but I deleted it after 1-2 weeks after I did the work it was for
As I was originally a web programmer, I can learn things, I am just asocial and like peace and my own pace.
I have an account but do not post to my page, only comment on cute animal pictures or funny things that come up. I keep my life pretty private.
Whether it will help is an open question, but I seriously doubt that it could possibly hurt.
