How to stop losing weight on keto?

(Matt) #1

I started keto for the health and energy, I’ve since lost over twenty pounds in four months. I don’t want to lose anymore. I have zero as appetite and have been dealing with a respiratory virus for a few weeks maybe that’s why no appetite? I have to force myself to eat. Now my doc said I might need a statin because my cholesterol is 380, ldl 309, triglyceride 63 and hdl 58. I have tried a couple sweet potato now and don’t feel very good. Thanks for any advice

If you’re at the point of maintenance you likely need to increase fat intake to stop weight loss, the adding carbs route may not be the answer especially if it’s not sitting well with how you feel.

I think you should give the blood numbers some time as well as research what they really mean (recent research is moving away - far away - from the knee-jerk “here’s a statin” approach.

You just shocked your body with something (likely the opposite of anything you tried before) and it caused a significant weight loss (congratulation on reaching goal) but, still somewhat of a shock that caused a significant change that is just finishing up.

I would explain to your doctor that you think this is normal at this time, do the blood tests again in 6 months and also research for those 6 months. (From what I hear on most podcasts - statins are usually ineffective and can actually cause problems).

I am not a medical professional but, I would not choose a time like this (big dietary change followed by significant weight loss and a blood draw) to make long term medical decisions (much rather after a steady 6 months, little or no weight change and armed with knowledge on acceptable blood numbers).

To reply to your question - as soon as you are feeling well, (if you don’t already) you might want to start and exercise regime.

Some extra cardio will drive demand for calories.

Some strength training will add muscle - further driving demand.

Then, if your keto is anything like 85/15 (with nearly zero carbs) you can move fat down a little and protein up a little and likely stay firmly in ketosis (just test with a blood ketone meter if worried about this).

If you are an outlier that can continue keto and continue losing weight below your goal - this might help.

I wouldn’t worry about appetite loss so much while you are ill unless you are underweight.

Once you feel better try adding a 1/2 cup of some ketogenic nuts. That always moves me from losing weight to gaining. Nuts are very calorie dense but yet I can eat a fair bit before I feel full.

Thank you for the responses! A lot of docs seem anti keto. To be honest I have cognitive dissonance right now. I felt good on keto physically, yet doc says cholesterol is bad and may need drugs.

There is a lot of info in documentaries and scientific reasearch that says statins are really bad for you and they don’t do much for you either.

We have a good friend in pharma who worked on statins and he said that he would never take them no matter how high his cholesterol was.

With regards to weight add in nuts or whipped cream with berries everyday and that should stabilize your weight
