What is the best way to get salt in? It seems like I’m always getting too much or too little salt. I either have too little salt in my diet, and get muscles cramps and the runs, or I do something like eat a single gherkin on an empty stomach and nearly shoot off the toilet like a rocket. This has been an issue for months. I usually do ok for three or four days at a time, and then eat something like a pickle or a few olives and all hell breaks loose.
How to get the salt in without issues
Your body will expel excess salt and you might try consuming more potassium nutrient rich food to get more. It is virtually impossible to eat enough food to overdose potassium and your body requires more of it on a ketogenic diet.
Up your water intake some as hydration could help if part of the symptoms are cause due to some level of dehydration.
Are you 100% sure it’s the salt and not a reaction to the particular food, or food on an empty stomach?
Karen, I have never heard of muscle cramps being a reaction to a food, is this a thing? Serious.
no, he said he got muscle cramps when he had too little salt (definitely a thing), explosive runs when he ate a salty pickle. I never heard of getting diarrhea from just salt - maybe that’s a thing too though - so I thought maybe it was a reaction to the food, or maybe vinegar on an empty stomach?
OK. I didn’t think I had ever herd an association with muscle cramp due to food reaction.
I’ll try upping my potassium. I doubt it’s a reaction to cucumbers. Any salty pickled food will do it. It’s definitely not dehydration. You don’t have to tell me to drink. I’ve been well hydrated my whole life, you can ask my mom.
You could also try drinking broth with added salt, just in case it’s the vinegar. People like bone broth, but it’s got more protein in it than other kinds, I’m currently “salting” with mushroom broth. (probably not very refreshing after a workout, though).
Could be the vinegar. My mother gets the runs from vinegar.
Bouillon “tea” is a great way to get your salt. If I’m feeling lazy or strapped for time, I just put 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and drink that down.
Gin!
I drink a lot of water, but maybe my consitpation is from a lack of salt. How do I get more salt on keto?
Thank you!
Oh yeah. I don’t like salt, and I’m not used to it. When I tried to get “enough” salt, it resulted in explosive diarrhea.
Now I put a teaspoon of salt-potassium blend** into my water flavoring mix: Put 1 cup lemon juice, 1 tsp stevia, and 1 tsp salt-potassium mix in 1-liter bottle, fill bottle with water. I put a squirt of this in my drinking water; the flavoring mix lasts a few days. I also add a small amount of the salt-potassium blend to hot cocoa and to foods.
I doubt that I’m getting the recommended amount of salt, but I’m not worried.
**At first I bought Nu-Salt, but it’s so expensive! Salt is cheap, and so is potassium chloride from Amazon.
