How to get off keto safely

I been on keto for about 4 months now and lost 45lb and I think I should have a cheat weekend but dont really want to gain weight, Because I am going to go crazy:slight_smile: and not going to stop until I vomit:face_vomiting::face_vomiting:.

Just curious…why are you considering this when you have had such great results? A huge cheat at this point may not end up being what you think, as the way you feel afterwards may be a lot worse than you anticipate!!! Just something to consider!!

I had to check and see if this was in the “humor” section. Just don’t do it.

Read about the people who do this and then feel like crap. Maybe you’ll be the different one who doesn’t feel bad and set themselves back.

According to many folks who go off on a good old carb binge you may end up with days of tummy aches, diarrhea, achy body, headaches, the blues or anxiety, etc.

If I was getting excited at the prospect of a binge, I’d check myself and try to get excited about something else, like a new outfit to reward my weight loss, or a book or whatever else you’re in to. You won’t have remorse over those types of things.

But yes, if you MUST binge to the point of vomiting, you are going to stall your weight loss and could possibly gain some back. You could be kicked out of ketosis for days. Or, if you’re prone to binging, you could be starting a run you lose control over. Every body is different.

PS. How does your title relate to your question?

There is no way around having a ‘cheat weekend’ without gaining weight. You will definitely put on some water and maybe some fat. I went away for a weekend to a function for my husband’s work. We were there less than 48 hours and I had dessert on Saturday night and had two cocktails made with simple syrup. The rest of the time I tried to make really good choices. I still gained 3.9 pounds and it took me almost 8 days to take that off. I think the seed oils (restaurant cooking and salad dressing) and the sugar were culprits. I still avoided grain - my dessert was chocolate mousse and few pieces of pecan pralines. I think if you feel hellbent on having cheat weekend, go for it, BUT recognize there is no way to do it without gaining. Once every four months we go out for either pizza or pasta. I know that means a 2 pound gain. I know that means it will take me about a week to get back and then throw me off two weeks in terms of my slow loss. But if I say I will NEVER have pizza/pasta again, that makes it harder to eat the way my body needs for me to eat. If I say it is something I can have three times a year, then the rest of the time I have no trouble sticking to this eating plan.

You aren’t going to gain back 45 pounds over a weekend. It doesn’t happen that fast.

You aren’t gonna do yourself any good by binging for a day or two. And it might not be the wonderful time you’re envisioning. It may make you feel bad enough that you’ll remember the hangover and not want to do that again.

A cheat meal or even a cheat day is a non-issue for most. Just don’t stay too long.

Anticipating a vomit is probably not the best game plan going into the weekend. I typically don’t “plan” cheat days or weekends. I do allow life to happen around me and I either choose to engage in it or not. Sometimes life includes meals at an amazing Italian restaurant and passing on a pasta plate would be practically sac religious. Other times life is a keto meal with friends. My attitude is that I’ve changed 90% of what I eat and when I eat. I’ll be damned if I’m going to give up the 10% of amazing moments, foods, and indulgences that give me genuine joy. Keep in mind, I am not a binge eater and I never have been. Ymmv. This is my choice and it has worked for me. Like others have said. You “will” gain weight whether it’s a day or a week. For me it’s fluid retention that goes away as quickly as it came. Day of pleasure = day of pain in my world. Balance grasshopper.

Ive been able to have an indulgence every once in awhile with no issues. I’ll have a cheat meal or maybe an ice cream or a slice of cake or whatever depending on where we are at and what we are doing. I don’t binge or anything like that, I just enjoy life and allow myself the occasional treat whatever that may be. You just have to make sure your able to control yourself and not let it take you on the carb path again. If you have the ability to limit yourself and be able to keep yourself from going overboard then love life and enjoy it.

Your post made me think again of the value of not being overly-strict if you don’t have to be. I am ketogenic and I intermittent fast 7 days/week. BUT - if we go out to dinner, go to a friend’s house for dinner, have friends over who bring food, and there is something I want to try or it feels like to completely avoid the carbs is going to create one of those “moments” - “wait, why aren’t you eating that? keto-what?” then I just eat it (though not too much if it is really a dense carb food - that makes me feel awful afterwards). It makes life a whole lot simpler and I don’t feel deprived. I have a friend who is in weight watchers and he is always asking about what I’m “allowed” to eat. If I had the mind-set that I wasn’t “allowed” to eat something, that is exactly what I would be hell-bent on eating. Everyone is different - this is how I approach it and it works for me. Your statement that you are planning to go “crazy” and binge until you vomit, though, is concerning. It sounds like you feel deprived. Maybe you have to do it once - but you will feel so awful afterwards, you may not want to ever do it again. Keto becomes naturally-limiting, I think, since you tend to feel so good when avoiding heavy-duty carbs, and then if you eat the heavy-duty carbs you feel so awful you just don’t want to do it again.

Well Keto is working great for me but lately ,for some reason every time I think of cookies or a burger with actual bread , my hand just start shaking.

(Frank) #12

I had one of those self limiting nights about 4 months in. I had m&ms, Cheetos, beer, etc. I had such an amazing carb hangover the next day. Haven’t had m&ms or Cheetos since then. Beers a different story.

(Hong Kaing) #13

Well I just want a cheat day but don’t want to gain back too much weight

(Frank) #14

The only way to find out how your body’s going to react is to do it. I find that if I know I’m going to be having “naughty” food, I try to keep it almost all naughty. Meaning I don’t have a lot of fat (none really) if I know I’m going to have some carbs. My body reacts much better with this routine.

Have a cheat meal - you’ll feel fine the next day. Don’t have a binge, it will be that much harder to go back to keto, and any kind of binge will make you feel like crap.

One thing I love about keto is that there are some keto-friendly things that can take the place of some of the old carbage. Seriously, there are some baked goods… cookies, cakes, pies, and other things, that are seriously good eats. I’ve made some that my non-keto friends wouldn’t have known were sugar free, low-carb, usually even gluten free. There are even some burger bun recipes out there (usually fathead) that really are pretty close to eating real bread in both flavor and texture without the high carbs.

Those are things that are getting more rare with me at this point in time. I used to have a keto dessert every day, sometimes with every meal. I make some really good keto muffins. I don’t do that anymore, at least not every day. But if I really want one, I know that I can have one. It wasn’t a mandate of any kind to cut back, just a feeling like I needed to lighten up a little on some of the stuff that was more “sizzle” than “steak”, stuff that was there mostly for taste, not nutrition. The scale seems to agree with me that it was the right decision. It kinda simplified the diet a little and probably helped the budget, too. Good quality keto baking ingredients aren’t cheap.

Just a thought, not sure if it is something you might consider.

Maybe start with a small cheat and see how you feel?? You get the most satisfaction from the first few bites, so that may be all you need to get over the craving!! Too much and you could easily fall off track, and I would hate to see that happen!! Another option is looking for Keto friendly versions of the goods you are missing. Good luck, whatever you decide to do!!

I think you answered your own question or at the very least flagged an issue that you have when it comes to carbs and the impact they have on you.

FYI I have my eye on you. Several of your posts and comments are looking a little spammy. I also want you to clarify your age because on another post you said you are 14. That completely changes any advice that is given to you here on this forum and is something you need to make clear every time you post.
