Hi all. I’m about 10 weeks in and generally feeling good but still trying to figure out how to deal with eyelid twitching and pounding heart when I go to bed, sometimes in the evening too. I’m taking at least 350 mg of magnesium per day plus electrolyte solution a few times a day. Could I possibly need more? I am female aged 59. Thanks for any wisdom out there!
How much magnesium is too much?
interesting. Do you take 1000 because you found you needed that much to control symptoms of low levels?
My twitches & cramps show up when I haven’t had enough salt. Make sure you are taking enough salt with the Mag. Salt regulates your magnesium & potassium storage. If you are taking enough salt & drinking plenty of water, you won’t have a problem with magnesium. I just take 1 1000 mg tab of magnesium malate (115 mg of elemental mg) , but I take a 1-gram salt tab nearly every day in addition to my salt in meals.
Yes to a certain degree. The levels you are at would not settle the symptoms down for me. It took about double that, but I also had to up my potassium as well. I also couldn’t believe how much salt I needed in the beginning of my Keto journey. Now 2 years in I have been able to cut that back and have missed days here and there on supplements and been fine. In the beginning that wouldn’t have been possible.
I take 600mg of magnesium daily as the citrate. I add in some magnesium aspartate if I get heart palpitations and I drink salty bone broth, if either heart palps or muscle cramps. Some days I will take an additional mag dose to take me up to 900mg base dose.
With COVID eating (cleaner keto) I have needed more magnesium and salty bone broth. I also add potassium chloride “No-Salt” to my twice daily meals and take a chelated Zinc and manganese supplement as we are heading into flu season.
I also take 500mg Nicotinamide Vitamin B3 twice daily due to surfing at my 50+ years.
I have not reached gut tolerance on my magnesium dosing. If I get a bad run of heart rrhytmia signs I’ll have salty bone broth and take 150mg of magnesium every 20 minutes until it settles. That is rarely that I need to do that.
Sounds like I need to try a higher magnesium dose and more salt. I do take a multivitamin with all the Bs but not regularly enough. I will try this and report back. Thanks so much!
FYI. Niacinamide can cause heart palpitations under conditions of cell stress.
Niacinamide promotes coronavirus replication?
I took 500mg last night and woke up multiple times with heart palpitations and this morning with a warm head. I’m going to discontinue since it’s making my infection worse. I’ve never had this issue before with niacinamide.
Aside from Niacinamide toxicity.
Vitamin D toxicity from cheap supplements and vitamin B12 deficiency can cause heart palpitations.
The source of a Vitamin D supplement can cause heart palpitations due to the company not lab testing pills for purity… Whether a pill contains much higher dosage than indicated on the bottle or not. This occurs with cheap supplements. I’ve had this toxicity issue happen personally.
I’ve taken a lichen based Vitamin D in the winter for over 5 years without issues.
Lack of B12 can cause heart palpitations. Most supplements I’ve tried were ineffective because I still had trouble going to sleep and waking up. So if you have trouble going to sleep and feeling refreshed upon waking. Then you’re deficient in methylcobalamin(a type of B12).
I’ve taken Jarrow formulas 1000mcg B12 in the past with sleep success but not sure if they’re still good.
I’ve been taking Herbaland Vitamin B12 and D3 here in Canada with sleep success.
