How many people here have experienced the "whoosh"?

Is it urban legend or is it true? How many people on keto here have experienced a sudden massive weight loss like up to 12 weeks after starting? I heard about the fat cells depleting and filling up with water and then all of a sudden they empty themselves and one loses weight like crazy. Did it happen to you?

I have never had this, I wish I did…

Possibly. It seemed like it took me forever to lose more than water weight, then suddenly around month 5 I was where I wanted to be. But I didnt have a lot to lose. It did seem quite sudden, though.

Yep. I did all the time in my earlier months on keto. It was like I lost weight in 4 week cycles. By the third week, I am squishy and look puffy and by the 4th week at some point I drop several pounds. I think it happens to some people and others loose weight more evenly.

I wish we really knew. One thing that’s always bothered me about the theory is that fat loss from cells will be necessarily fairly slow - even when outright fasting most people only lose a half lb or ~225 grams of fat per day or so.

Over weeks/months the fat cells are gradually becoming less full of fat. Do they really remain the same size and take in water to make up the difference? Or do they just contract?

If something happens after 12 weeks, for example, why would all the water leave at once?

Loch Ness…Yeti…Whoosh…at least for me.

I reckon not standing on the scales for a few months creates it. Get back on and whoosh or whump!

There are more whooshes in this forum than standing on the edge of a busy highway:

I dunno about massive, but even now (years after losing most weight) my weight loss happens in irregularly paced drops of, often, five or six pounds.

There’s a theory that, basically, your body replaces the triglycerides in the cell with water for a temporary period before they finally give that up.

Yes, in the beginning.

I had a water weight woosh of around 10 lbs overnight when I quit the carbs. I’ve lost another 10 in the next 10-12 days. Not weighed in the last week so really don’t know if I’ve lost anymore.

Thanks all. I was just interested in hearing some personal experiences with the whoosh. I feel a bit squishy and puffy myself right now, but still no whoosh. I`ll let you know if it ever happens. Sure do wish it would. In the MEANTIME however, I am really enjoying eating keto.

Not really apart from a water woosh. I can shed 3kg through water over 2 or 3 days.
Overall, my weight loss journey looks like a descending staircase. Stressed out over it in the beginning, now don’t care anymore.
