How long have you been in Ketosis?

(Mike W.) #21

Am I wrong to think that if your body is not in Ketosis (burning ketones) then it is burning glucose which has to come from somewhere?

(Carl Keller) #22

If you are not burning ketones, then you must be burning glucose. Glucose comes from carbs usually, but from what I have read, excessive protein can be converted to glucose as well. But I don’t speak from experience so I am curious what others might say.

I don’t see the big deal, the body is designed to go back and forth, as long as the majority of time I am burning fat. And that is easy to do doing two things, eat in a small feeding window, and no sugar or Grain. also do not eat potatoes.

About that protein: it depends. I bought a continuous glucose monitor to test this theory, and I did not see any increase in blood sugar, eating upwards of 120+ grams of protein in a single meal. However, Jimmy Moore did a high protein test and got hypoglycemia, they theorize due to his glucagon resistance. (The theory: insulin goes up, and then glucagon does too, leading to insulin decrease, but his glucagon does not go up as much as it should, meaning his insulin drives down his blood sugar.)

I have been in and out of ketosis for the last five years. I find it difficult to stay in ketosis, if ketosis is 0.5 or greater BOHB. I can exercise and go less than this. I can go to sleep with 1.0 and get up with 0.4. For me, small amounts of carbs add up to kick me out.

What is BOHB?

(Carl Keller) #26

This is encouraging to hear. I love my protein and I thought I might be eating too much. I was trying to stay around 80 grams a day but it’s not easy. Thanks for the info.

ß-‐ hydroxybutyrate, most likely.

I confess I ate half a baked potato the other day. First potato I think in 9 months. I did slather it in butter and sour cream though. Oops!

(Bob M) #29

Yes, beta-hydroxybutyrate, which goes by a variety of acronyms, BOHB, BHB, etc. My understanding is that BOHB comes from its chemical formula.

#30

it is one of the ketone bodies

Correct
