How long for Ketosis?

(Steve) #1

So in the past few days I have started trying to make the transition from paleo (which I was still following low carb) to the Keto diet at the advice of a friend. I take in <20 net carbs daily and have increased my fat intake. Yesterday I was showing .5 and then 1.5 on the test strips and today I was at 4.0 moderate. Does this mean that I am in ketosis or will it still probably take more time to be Keto adapted? Thanks in advance!

Given your paleo consumption you are probably in ketosis and over the next 36 to 48 hours your brain will adapt to using ketones as fuel.

From there it is a matter of your body remaining in ketosis to convert fat to ketones for energy.

Welcome! Enjoy the adventure.

Overall it is about 4 days:

  • 8 hours to empty the stomach
  • 8 to 24 hours to empty the liver of stores
  • 24 to 48 hours for your body to increase ketone levels
  • 48 to 96 hours for the brain to bring in 75% of its fuel required from ketones, your body will use protein to make glucose for the remaining 25% fuel required

After that you are on the path of ketosis and being fat adapted, then it is a matter of your body upping the ketones levels to meet the demands of the muscles for the next three weeks. After three weeks most muscles have stopped consuming ketones.
