I do IFing about 5 days a week. If I happen to bounce up too close to my goal weight, I always try to stay slightly under, then I will do longer fasts, usually 36-48 hrs. but I have done a few 60+ while in maintenance. I think this is a very individual thing. As long as you keep an eye out and don’t let the weight gain become a big one, some IFing and maybe a short EX will probably get you back on track.
How come fasting doesn't slow down the metabolism, but calorie-restriction does?
Thank you for your response. I don’t want to slip into eating disorder type thinking/behavior but am trying to balance that with my long established habit of going unconscious/mindless about eating and then in what seems an instant I’m up 30 lbs and my sugar sobriety has relapsed- I’m back into feeling crappy and out of control w/addiction. That’s what I do not want to repeat ever again. Fasting seems to help but I worry about taking it too far. Truly I just don’t want to have to think so darn much about all of this!
I think most of us can relate to being tired of having to think so hard about our eating, especially when first coming into this WOE. I know (or I’ve heard, rather) that it can be doubly hard when there is a history of eating disorders to cope with also. Although I have not had food addictions, I’m familiar with what an addiction feels like. Be kind to yourself. Nothing you do is a failure, we all learn as we go here. I think from a practical standpoint, the only way to really set your metabolism back in a way that will take longer (but still totally possible) to recover from is to lose control with sugar and other carbs. If I have a craving, I find it really helps to divert thoughts away from from those foods, and plan my next keto meal. If you don’t fast, no biggie.
