How bad is it eating bad carbs here and then in between Keto? I feel so guilty

Ask yourself why you are eating those items. Is it convenience? Comfort? Laziness? Cravings? No food in the house? In other words, stop and examine your mindset and emotions. Identifying why you are reaching for them is the first step to making a different choice.

Possible solutions:
Convenience: drive through a different type of fast food place that offers more low-carb options.
Comfort: make a low-carb version of what you want
Laziness: remind yourself why you eat low-carb
Cravings: get yourself a low-carb treat you haven’t had lately.
No food in the house: get thee to the market

Taking a meal or two off low-carb is easy for some, but it’s a slippery slope for many. If you are able to do it without sliding further, you already know your willpower level and would probably not need to ask others for opinions. (See where I’m going with that?)

Good luck, and kick ass on exams!

@AprilI I don’t know how to categorize it but I am in a foreign country soon going back home, and there is all this amazing local food that isn’t keto friendly plus the holidays… I feel I miss out if I don’t try it before I go back. Even if ideally I would resist the temptetion.

Sometimes it’s inevitable that I get more carbs than I should, but I find that it only takes about 24 hours of eating keto to get back into ketosis. Everyone is different though, and for some people it takes longer. It also depends on if your fat adapted yet and how many carbs you had. I wouldn’t worry much, just do the best you can. I don’t purposefuly go over on my carbs anymore because of how aweful they make me feel, but before I was fat adapted I didn’t notice carbs affecting me much. It all takes time and just keep moving forward until eventually you won’t want carbs at all. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas!

Does one small ding from a flying bit of gravel that hits your car completely destroy it? It will probably make a noise. At worst, it might make a tiny dent in the paint or nick the windshield. Crying and bemoaning such is a tempest in a teapot and a waste of time and energy.

What happens when your car is left out in a hail storm where it drops 2" ice balls onto your car for 15 minutes straight? It probably breaks most of the glass and pulverizes most of the upper surfaces of your car, likely totaling it. If you’re gonna cry and bemoan such, there is at least a reason to do so.

Sweat the big stuff, yeah. Big stuff matters. And yes, little stuff adds up. But a half of a small potato three months ago or one piece of sugary candy at your office party,… assuming you’re not T1D or severely allergic,… (walks away scratching head…)

Hey, self-honesty is the best way to start, regardless of the “why” behind it. When I travel or visit other places, I allow myself a bit of off-plan eating within reason. During the time frame, I will go back to a moderate low-carb range (the Diet Doctor site defines it as 20-50g per day of carbohydrates). That allows me to have small portions of some things I would ordinarily avoid, permitting me to try the “local flavor” while keeping true to the lifestyle I’ve chosen. I have found that I do not have adverse effects from that strategy, and it is easy to drop back down to under 30g when I’m ready.

When I “cheat” it with a jar of Virgin Coconut Oil.

I did, once, eat one single macaroni, I was cooking for the kids, and am in the habit of sampling to determine when the pasta is done, el dente. I was thinking about something else, I was not on task, and I just swallowed instead of spitting that carbage in the garbage.

This was my only carbage transgression since starting keto.

My experience is that after just a few short months the desire to eat junk diminishes substantial especially if I focus on those wonderful items I can eat.

Keto for Life!

Warm Regards,
Richard

Resonated with this.

On Tuesday, I completed a 7 day fast (I originally wanted to go for 14 days but had to end it). I started feasting and I was doing well until yesterday, I was in front of my favorite cookie shop and couldn’t resist it. Mind you, I was quite full and I even ate more meat when i got the urge to help me resist. It really made me realize how dysfunctional my relationship is with food but I gave in. Told myself, unlike the other times where once I ate carbs I would go crazy (probably from guilt), I will allow myself 1 cookie. So I ate and I was quite sure I was longer in ketosis but I refused to beat myself up over it and just decided to go for a run.

Before sleeping I decided to check my blood ketones and it was 1.3 mmol/L. Now, I am not sure if it was the running, the fasting prior or both that did it but this is the first time it has happened to me. I am not sure if my body is fat adapted because I’ve only been keto from June to August, stopped in October-mid November this year. Just recently got back. (Not sure if this is healthy, will gradually build-up to doing keto more consistently.)

Anyways, my point is I think my 7 day fast really helped reset my system. I love that there is fasting as a tool for me. Fasting again today😊

Extended fasting (5+ days) puts the body in a deep state of ketosis. BG has to drop, the body is forced into lipolysis, and the hormonal changes quickly provoked make fat adaptation a non issue.

As a OMAW faster, I’ve found that nothing I eat during that single meal will kick me out of ketosis. It will increase my BG and decrease my ketones, but they never drop below 1 mmol. Unfortunately, second and third feedings are not as forgiving…

thanks for the tip! this gives me hope coz although I don’t intend to, I still have moments where I feel compelled to eat a potato or rice or sugar. I am aiming for weaning myself off of it.

Where I am currently living there isn’t that variety of products available. I wish. There are some gluten free things but not a lot of low carb things unfortunately.

Amazon carries a lot of keto stuff.

Have you ever heard or said ‘even when I look/smell food I gain weight’? Well it is true! An old study, Pavlovs dogs, when the dogs were fed a bell was rung, after a time just ringing the bell made the dogs salavitate! When we see or smell something delicious, sweet, or savory, we have a small insulin response, if one eats carbs that will create fat, if one eats very low carbs, insulin will have little to no effect. Keep calm and keto on!

I posted something on the ‘cruise tips’ string, I am going on an 8 day Southern Carribean cruise and I will down to or close to ideal body weight, my A1C is 5.0, my blood pressure is normal. When I return from the cruise I will resume the keto life, and fasting as I want to. The keto life is not a sentence, it’s a strict but breakable guideline not law. Even the popular keto and fasting doctors says special events are special, stay keto or not, and after the event, keep calm and keto on.
