Final exams and soon the holidays are here and I have been eating a cake and a burger here and there but usually, I am really strict with the Keto diet. I feel bloated and horrible but my question is does one in a while cheating impact all the hard work?
How bad is it eating bad carbs here and then in between Keto? I feel so guilty
If you “feel bloated and horrible” why the hell would you do it?
Is the brief momentary enjoyment of certain foods worth that to you?
For me it’s really bad. I bloat, my skin feels bad, my mood changes and I feel lethargic. I did on one occasion schedule a break in my diet for a holiday and after the holiday I felt bad. Fortunately, I’m disciplined enough to jump straight back into keto without much of an issue so within a few days I started feeling better again. Now I’m at the point whereby I just think it isn’t worth it. Not only does it interrupt your diet but it makes you feel awful.
I am relatively new to keto. I really only got consistent at the beginning of November. I took a week off for Thanksgiving and gained a considerable amount of weight. It took about a week to get back to where I was at the beginning of my “cheat week”. I think that when we mess up, whether that is we eat carbs or break a fast early we have to not allow ourselves to feel guilty. We are human afterall…
I personally think we should say to ourselves “whoops!” then forget we messed up and simply move forward.
In my opinion it’s not worth it. You end up feeling terrible for just a few moments of “mouth pleasure” as Joe Rogan calls it I think that in time you will eventually crave Keto treats. I used to crave all the old carbs I enjoyed but now find myself craving things like whipped cream, bacon, and dark chocolate. Some people can safely bring in carbs (without going off the deep end) back to the diet but I think you have to be very disciplined to do this. Give it time, I am only on day 19 and just began craving the Keto treats. Hope this helps!
For some people it can take a week or even longer to get back into ketosis properly… maybe find some keto safe treats so it doesn’t hurt your progress?
I too have noticed that as I progress it is easier and easier to avoid carbs. On my “break” I ate some bread that tasted so sweet it was nearly inedible… it was not a “sweet bread”.
One way to help focus the mind is to eat simply - for example, only eat eggs (which ever way you like) or eggs and bacon, etc. That can help focus you on your studies and away from food because you will not have many choices to make (except how to cook your eggs).
I crave also keto treats but carb ones too hahha
Maybe I need to make sure I don’t run out of them
It’s not bad just recognize what happened to you when you did fall off the wagon.
I have done it both inadvertently and deliberately… and it could happen again.
Being armed with the experience and knowledge of what the carbs do to you should help you take steps to avoid it happening again. Great suggestion on stocking up on keto foods so when hunger strikes you have good options. Slowly the “pain” and readjustment period back to keto will act as a strong deterrent trust me!
Follow that which your body is craving. Any significant carbs like the bun of a burger might throw you out of ketosis or might not. When combined with other carbs creeping in, yes it would throw you out of ketosis for a period of time.
Your decisions.
All occasional Carb intake does is temporarily halt lipolysis. If fat loss is your goal, it’s best to keep it infrequent, unless experiencing starvation effects. The big thing is not to reestablish any type of Carb based pattern, which could potentially lead you back down the path of fat regain.
I’m in the “my diet doesn’t rule my life” camp. For me, there is no such thing as a cheat day. There are no bad foods, just some that are more nutritious than others. Most of the time I eat nutritious foods. But not 100% of the time. I’m going to have pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. I’m going to have eggnog at Christmas. I’m going to eat cake at weddings. And on my birthday. I’ll drink fruit smoothies at the beach… I’m not going to feel guilty about eating non nutritious food occasionally. If all goes well, I’ll be in this planet for another 40+ years, and I won’t pledge that a French fry will never cross my lips.
My approach probably won’t work for someone who has a psychological addiction. They may require a much stricter compliance. But don’t think that restricting carbs to 20g for 365 days a year is required for optimal health or best weight loss results.
You can be “in ketosis” and not fat adapted, which can take 4-8 weeks. So if you’re constantly cheating, you may never fully get all the benefits of being keto.
“Is the brief momentary enjoyment of certain foods worth that to you?”
Are you for real? Of course its worth it LOL !
Only you can decide on how you want to approach this WOE and when/if/how you make other choices. The main thing is not to judge yourself harshly on whatever decision you make and try not to “throw the baby out with the bathwash”! Be kind and gentle on yourself. And good luck on your exams!
The beauty of IF/EF Keto WOE is that you adapt your system to easily go between fat burning and Carbs
Long gone are the days of fad dieting when “cheating” lost weeks of progress or we just gave up
An Indulgence day is just a good excuse to do a 24 to 48 EF
I work IF/EF WOE around my life and love it
I was six or seven weeks into Keto when for some reason or other I ate a Magnum ice cream than two pain chocolats…then fainted !! When I recovered, I checked my BG level…6.5mmol/L.
So I can’t explain it. But it scared the s*** out of me. I’ll never even go NEAR the edge of the wagon again !
