Holy moly ketones!

#1

After a rough week of low ketone registration the 30 minute cardio hiit sent me back into my ketone zone

Are these tests an OK guideline to go by? Again, as with anything Keto i seem to see mixed thoughts on the internet.

They are not reliable after the first few weeks. After that, high ketones typically mean dehydration (sorry to burst the original posters bubble… but drink some water)

40oz x 4 today defo not dehydrated

That’s great! But those strips still aren’t accurate in the long term. Consider setting a blood or breath meter to measure your ketone awesomeness

It’s normal for ketone levels to vary widely. Even after 17 years, I occasionally test myself with them. Yes, they still work. The important thing is that they confirm that you’re secreting ketones again, relevant after significant Carb intake. After that and until your next Carb intake they’re unnecessary. As is a ketone meter. Don’t get wrapped up in constantly testing for ketones, ketosis is only one part of lipolysis.

There can be blood levels of ketones that don’t show up on ketostix - and - ketone levels are higher late at night. In my experience, ketostix at midnight or later are always dark and in midday are quite light.

But for beginning weeks, ketostix can provide positive feedback if you use them in an informed way.

Regarding hydration - it’s not just about water intake, it’s about sufficient salt intake for cellular hydration. Dr. Phinney recommends around 3 grams a day, and says better to err on excess salt rather than too little, as far as functional health & physiology go. Adding a serving or two of salty hot broth/bouillon to your day, or nibbling on salt straight from your palm are things that people around here are known to do…

Haha i thought i was nuts licking some sea salt out of my hand!!

#9

Hahaha, yer just using your primal noggin!

It’s amazing how fast salt helps everything from weird low-minerals headaches to weird lower bowel issues. Some of us around here add concentrated salt water (ā€œsoleā€) to both our morning and evening plain water drinking for good measure.

I drink ten glasses of water a day and my pee is clear. But I am back to working out, and for the first time in two months after a workout I do turn the test strips purple. I find that interesting, because many posters say a workout has the opposite effect. Eight weeks of strict keto, yet I did not work out until now because of first, the keto flu, and second, a month of bronchitis. Sometimes showed trace the first eight weeks, only a couple of times pink. So something is definitely different with the workouts.
