HOLIDAYS 🎄= Roadtrips.. need snack ideas

(Cindy) #22

Olives and pickles! Those are kind of hard to over-indulge in, I think. Maybe take a small baggie of sunflower seeds, too? Something already portioned out so you can eat too many. As much as I think it’s important to break bad habits, I also think it needs to be done in moderation when possible.

I completely understand wanting to snack while driving. I’ve always said I couldn’t be a truck driver without weighing 400lbs. I might also suggest that, if you fast 1/2, you still have some planned snacks for when you break that fast. Otherwise, convenience store foods might be too tempting.

Be sure to take your water, too!

So true! Better to put in separate bags ready so I don’t over do it. Awesome! Thanks for that advice.

20 hours, pfffft. I drove across Canada and ate food out of a cooler for 5 days, buying only coffee on the way. I didn’t even have ice in the cooler. I ate the cheese and sausages first, then less perishable items like canned fish.

You can take anything you can eat cold, e.g., chicken, beef slices, cooked sausage, cooked eggs, broccoli and dip. . . . Also pork rinds, nuts, canned sardines or salmon, etc. If you want to have coconut oil, just slip a small jar of coco oil into the cooler. Might as well put some ice packs in there too.

If you stop at a food place, burger patties are a good bet (you can even order a few extra to snack on in the car). Or ask for bacon and eggs–no toast, no potatoes.

I never feel sleepy while driving, but I’ve heard that getting out of the car and taking a few breaths of fresh air helps. Maybe jump around a bit, flap your arms, and so on.

Happy traveling, and be safe!

If you have a tote cooler, you can pack some boiled eggs. A few of those can keep food out of my mind for hours. Some other ideas:

raw broccoli and ranch dressing to dip
cheese sticks
canned sardines or anchovies
unwiches (sandwiches with lettuce instead of bread to hold it together)

Another vote for fasting. Eating most anything will end up making me sleepy or sleepier. And drinking anything means bathroom stops. Might as well just 'git ‘er done.’

If you don’t smoke, well, that’s out. Driving while really tired and sleepy can be real torture. Singing to yourself, yelling at yourself - I realize if you’ve got other people in the car this can be contra-indicated. Slapping yourself, opening the window where hopefully cold air will revive you. Yeah, and it does - like maybe for 30 seconds…

Personally, I’d not attempt a 20 hour straight through drive by myself, unless I could start really early, like 5am. That would put you there at 1am. Even that is tough. If you start at 9am, you’re finishing at 5am. Between midnight and 5am is a dangerous time.

For safety, I’d break this into two.

I’ve got a ways to go tomorrow - 400 miles back to my employer’s home base, then later 700 miles to home.(~1770 km total). Have done it before. Most important thing is to get good sleep tonight. Probably eat a keto breakfast. Get the 400 miles over with by mid-afternoon, then maybe take a nap. I end up in Atlanta, so arriving around 6 a.m. is ideal, thus I need to leave for the second leg around 8 p.m. Fasting has been my savior lately for long drives, especially overnight. Last time got a big coffee with about 3 hours to go.

I’m super prone to getting car sick lol so I did think about fasting but I’m sure that wouldn’t be a smart idea for me so I think I’m just going to eat a meal before we leave and try to make it a normal day as possible. Long drives are hard for me but if I’m driving I don’t get car sick lol I’m just weird like that so it would be smart for me to be prepared because getting car sick half way in would be horrible! But safe travels on your trip! Hope it flies by as for me too!

Thanks you and Omg you are a roadtrip warrior! I’m not sure about being in the car longer then 20 hrs lol but thanks for the advice. Hopefully it goes by quick. Lat time we drove, every time we stopped it felt like I was still moving from being in the car driving so long.

Anabel, let us know how it all came out.
