Hip Stiffness, Hand Numbness

I do not think this is keto related but curious if anyone knows what this is, why it happens and what I could do. I have no one else to ask and I would need to be lying on the floor bleeding before I would see a doctor.

My daughter is bringing a friend home so I have been cleaning since yesterday. Prior to yesterday had no pains in legs or hips.

I decided to clean out under bed drawers. Spent an hour sitting on a rug, cleaning out the drawer. Later in the day noticed my right hip felt sore. Today it is worse. I took two advil, waiting for them to kick in. I take advil about twice a year and it is usually due to a caffeine headache.

Had something similar in 2019, where I had a problem with my dishwasher, sat on my kitchen floor for an hour fixing it. Next day woke up with a very sore left knee which lasted months. It got tolerable but was not good. Went away sometime in 2020. In March 2020 took my puppy (I got her prepandemic!) to the beach and we ran around more than I usually do. Next day right leg was sore in the shin area radiating up to the knee. I need to keep cleaning so any suggestions as to what this is, how to make it go away and why it happens.

I had pain in my hips when I was younger but not recently. I am in my mid 50s

I know it is related to sitting on the floor cleaning

I am not generally stiff except when getting up from a sitting position, my back is stiff for about 10 steps then I walk normally. Have had this since my 30s after my first pregnancy. Does not bother me much

Stuff’s connected. I have a totally degenerated L5 disc, likely resulting from injury during childhood, although not 100% certain about origin. It could have been something as simple as another child pulling away the chair as I sat down and ended up on the floor. To laughter all around.

I first started getting pain from that disc in my early 30s. One of the first episodes involved being immobilized for about 5 days in 1975-76 time frame. By mid 1980s, when I had a full spinal x-ray done, the disc had already degenerated to the degree it was paper thin.

Aside from direct pain and impeded mobility from that disc, over the years the rest of me has become steadily less flexible and more limited in mobility; I’d guess in response to my compensating for the lack of mobility at the disc. For a number of years I was able to relieve the pain and immobility by squatting against a wall lowering my buttocks to the floor between my feet. This would result in a sudden feeling of coldness in my lower back and relieve both pain and stiffness. This hasn’t worked for the past couple of decades.

Just saying, the hip pain/stiffness may be a consequence of something else. You’re still at the stage where only sitting on the floor makes it noticeable. If it’s really spinal related it may get worse over time.

My knees are mostly pain-free on keto, but I can walk up and down stairs only so many times before they start to hurt again. Before keto, they’d hurt just getting out of bed.

The one thing to check is your carbohydrate intake. If I stay under 20 g a day, I am usually pretty much pain-free, but there is an amount of carbohydrate I can eat that is more than 20 g but still low enough for me to stay in ketosis, and I know when I’ve reached that range of intake because the following day my joints are stiff, my knees don’t like the steps, and my liver/age spots are more visible. Some days, I can get up off the floor without holding onto anything, and other days, it’s not difficult, but I definitely need support. I suspect those are also days after my carb intake got a little too high.

If you’re being more active try upping your electrolytes, especially salt. Maybe your sweating more than usual during your activities and the lack of salt is manifesting as soreness and stiffness.

Thank you. Have not been around as much as usual and saw the responses (was busy with the daughter visit after the cleaning). My hip is now fine, my knees are fine. I am at the end of Day 3 of a fast and feel less stiff. However, to be honest I did not feel bad before I fasted (first fast in over a month) and have not been as Keto or Gluten Free as I should be (I do not have Celiac but have a child that does and at least one of those genes comes from me and too much wheat upsets my stomach.)

The new thing that is bothering me, because there is always some weird thing that is happening and eventually (I hope) goes away, is the pinkie and ring finger on my left had have been slightly numb and tingling. They function fine. I am right handed. It is usually an Ulner nerve compression. Not sure what the cause or if it related to my Hashimotos. I also have been borrowing a friends car and this started about 5 days after I started driving it, including for about 3 hours a day or two before this started. I go out of my way not to use my hand and to keep it straight and not bent at the elbow. After doing a little research I noticed that I do sleep in a way that aggravates this. Anyone have suggestions? Is is no better or worse than before the fast and I cannot switch cars although I do not think that is the cause

@VirginiaEdie will do better on the electrolytes, not just salt but magnesium too.

@amwassil Thank you fortunately it went away. With back pain I often wonder what was there to begin with and what is an injury or disease. I feel like if everyone had a spinal x-ray when they stopped growing, a lot of the things that are diagnosed would turn out not to be the underlying cause. I pulled my back out for the first time in about 2006 and it was bending down to pick up a piece of paper. I went to a chiropractic who was recommended and he took an x-ray and said one leg was shorter than the other. Since I was standing in a rather twisted way due to the injury, I have my doubts. After that I started working on my core, stretching more. I had a few repeats but not since 2010 or so. Ironically that happened while biking (and I was a regular cyclist so no idea why).

It is possible that fluid collecting in your lymph system is pressing on a nerve. I make no promises, but check out lymphatic massage. There should be a few videos about it on YouTube.
