I have been on the keto diet for 2 months. Tonight I drank half a bottle of Brut cavee champagne. After 2 hours I tested my ketones which read out at a 1.5 with a blood testing meter. I don’t understand how this is possible since drinking alcohol is supposed to pause your ketosis. I am fully fat adapted. My question is does alcohol really affect ketosis as much as we think it does? In my specific case I am getting higher Ketone readings after drinking alcohol than before which I find very odd.
Higher ketones after alcohol consumption
Alcohol metabolism…fatty acids and ketones are an end product.
Among them is beta hydroxybutyrate…That’s what your measuring
I would say you already had ketones floating around in your bloods that your body has already produced, consuming the alcohol would have stopped any further production of ketones for upwards of 12 hours.
Although you drank, you still had ketones in your system.
Not a doctor but, blood measurements are just about what is produced but not consumed.
If your brain (which is affected by alcohol last I heard) is preferentially using some extra glucose because of the alcohol in your system - I can see why more ketones might end up stuck in the blood (doesn’t alcohol slow metabolism too - another reason you have ketone energy unused sitting in the blood - in very general terms).
I would not rely on short term jumps and falls after consuming alcohol and positive or negative indicators. It is the regular “hey, I have some ketones by keeping carbs down under 20g regularly” signal that should be considered beneficial.
