High lipid panel

(Janet) #1

Really nervous about my lipid panel…LDL is 171… Cholesterol is 264. Calcium in blood. Doc ran another test on calcium and it came back neg. so no treatment. Keto makes me feel great but I really proceed with caution. I’m eating, walnuts, ground flax, avocado oils, salmon, mct oil and trying to stay with heart healthy fats. Still worried. I’m 60, lift weights, good BP. MACROS are 20 carbs about 70 protein and 115 fat.

What’s your triglyceride/HDL ratio?

Yes. This is a much better indicator of potential heart disease. You could also request a cardiac calcium score test which measures the actual amount of plaque you have in your cardiac arteries.

Check out the info in the cholesterol category. It can help put your mind at ease regarding cholesterol https://www.ketogenicforums.com/c/health/cholesterol

I am a lean mass hyper responder and my total cholesterol is over 300, ldl over 200 but my HDL is 121 and Trigs are around 60. You want to look at HDL and Trigs. Also what you have eaten 3 days prior to having the cholesterol test can affect the results you get (even when you have fasted for 12-14 hours prior to the blood draw).

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #4

Remember that for real heart health, you want to be eating saturated fat, which will increase your HDL—there is no drug capable of doing that. Monounsaturated fats are a good source of energy.

To get a good combination of saturated and monounsaturated fats, eat fatty meat and cook with butter, lard, tallow, or bacon grease. Avoid the processed vegetable oils (corn, canola, safflower, peanut, etc.) and stick with avocado, coconut, or olive oil for their healthy polyunsaturated fats (mostly omega-3 and -6).
