High level of ketones

#1

Hello all! This is my first post.
I’ve been on a Keto lifestyle all 2018 and after falling for sugar in 2019 I went back in March.
I sometimes get a bit worried as my ketone levels are average 4.0. Glucose is normal 75 to 91.
I am also having trouble loosing weight. Taking in consideration that I’m not exercising due to the quarantine. Food-wise I’m pretty good at following the fast breaking rules, not consuming carbs and absolutely no sugar. I fast very often either 24 few times every week or 48hs every other week. Also normally eat 2 meals a day, except weekends.
I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but not loosing weight and could loose a couple more pounds. Maybe cortisol is to blame as I have a hard time sleeping well (my whole life)
I’m 5.6, 128lb, 40yo
Any advise?
Thank you all!

Welcome to the Ketogenic Forums!

My ex was about your height, and at your current weight he looked emaciated. So I wouldn’t worry about not losing, personally. Your ketone level is fine. If you are new to the ketogenic diet, I suspect that as you adapt, your ketone level will drop a bit. As your muscles switch to burning fatty acids instead of glucose, they will stop needing the ketones the liver is producing, and the liver will cut back production to match it more closely to need. Just keep your carbohydrate intake as low as possible, and your body will sort things out.

You are probably used to hearing that diabetic ketoacidosis is dangerous and even deadly. Well, it is, but it’s not a risk, as long as your pancreas is producing insulin. Not only that, but ketone levels in DKA are typically 20.0 or higher; 4.0 is not a problem at all. Ketone levels are a bit higher when fasting.

Typically, the last few pounds are the hardest to lose, and sometimes our body likes to carry a bit more fat than we’d really prefer. Myself, I’d like to lose another 60-70 pounds of fat, but my metabolic numbers are excellent, and the fat I’m carrying around doesn’t interfere with my life (the way it did when I was 80 pounds heavier), so I try not to worry about it. Keep us up to date with your progress.

Thanks for your words!
I hope I can get back to the gym soon. That will help with stress/sleep/cortisol.
I also need to be a bit more patient

This sounds like you are already at a good height and weight to me?

Keto is great for so many things beyond losing weight, so I totally feel yes do Keto --but maybe your body will just have all the other benefits of Keto and you don’t need to lose anything??

Welcome to the forum =).

After a 48hr fast, last night I had a light dinner. Started with bone broth and after an hour had cow liver with some stemmed vegetables. Finished with some 100% cocoa chocolate with a bit of peanut butter (to make it bearable)
Checked my blood an hour later and got 4.2 ketones and 103 glucose
This morning 4.8 ketones and 98 glucose.
I’m literally high on ketones
I can feel it…
Happy hump day!
