High ketone levels Normal blood sugars

(Brandon Irish) #1

So i am re-entering the keto diet after taking a small break. Im curious if anyone who has type 1/2 diabetes has ever asked their doctor at what level of blood ketones / blood sugar should someone start to be concerned with DKD. I see anything from 3 to 10 mmol. Last time i got up to about 6 and started to feel like absolute garbage. I was able to bring it down by increasing sugar and carb intake by a bit. Just wanted to get others take on it.

I feel fine up to 9.3

I’m assuming you mean Type 1 or 2 rather than 0.5?

T1 can get DKA with not enough insulin and extremely high blood sugars.

For T2’s its far harder if not impossible (although some medications have been known to trigger DKA in T2’s under very specific circumstances). Are you currently taking any medication?

i am on invokana and metformin

(bulkbiker) #5

Ok Invokana is an SGLT2 inhibitor which is one of the drugs where this can happen (athough rarely) be careful

Yah im on low dosage thanks for the info.

(bulkbiker) #7

Hopefully you won’t be for much longer…

(Brandon Irish) #8

yah i dont think that will happen. Even when on keto my liver dumps sugar into my system over night and i wake up with elevated blood sugars…

Only if you keep refilling the glucose stores…
try some intermittent fasting alongside keto… even more powerful than diet alone.

yah im working towards that i really like to try Omad… but i know that will be difficult

(bulkbiker) #11

Start slow… I started skipping breakfast then mostly skip lunch these days … maybe a small meal late afternoon and a main meal around 7 pm then nothing until the following afternoon.
Once the stores are depleted providing you stay low carb enough not to refill them you should be fine.
