I’ve been on keto for 1 year and have cured my fatty liver, cholesterol levels and lost over 40lbs. Recently I had a blood test and my glycogen was high. I started testing my BS daily the last 7 days and it’s always around 130 fasting which would make me think I’m diabetic. Does anyone know why my sugars would be high when I haven’t had sugar more than once in a year? I also track my macros so I know I’m not getting to much protein and I eat 99% whole foods.
High fasting blood sugar?
Are you taking any medication that has an effect on BG levels? I take prednisone because of a transplant and it gives me raised levels even though I am staying under 20 carbs pretty much every day.
Did you get an HbA1c test? Three month average glucose levels is what that is.
Mine runs 120 to 130 and I’ve been keto 7+ months. My post meal 1 hr bg is 103 and my 26 hr fasting BG is 103. Mine I Believe is insulin resistance. My 26 hr ketone level measured at the same time was 1.6 mmol/L so decent ketones. Last measurement of HbA1c was 5.4. So I’m not diabetic but strongly insulin resistant. You may be the same.
Do you mean your fasting glucose was high? How high? How long had you been fasting? How early in the morning was the test?
My FBG is typically my highest reading of the day. Dawn phenomenon. I do/did have prediabetrs so it could be that still.
Fasting over a day helps. So does good sleep, no stress, and so.etimes an evening glass of wine.
how many consistent hi readings you have?
are you sure about the accuracy of the testing device?
This sounds similar as my ketones have been about 1.2 to 1.8. I need to get blood work at the end of the month but I had no issues with this 6 months ago. I’m just wondering why I’m now becoming insulin resistant.
My readings are not super high but maybe half the time they are into the prediabetic range of around 5.5. I eat breakfast or coffee with protein powder in it and my bg drops to a 5 and below.
It’s been like this for a few years. I started keto to address it but fbg only got a bit better. On the other hand, my postprandial numbers are great!
I don’t take any medication. I am retesting at the end of the month. I will pay more attention to the coded name. My doctor just said she was concerned with my glycogen level.
I don’t remember exactly but am getting retested later this month and will pay more attention but my doctor specializes in keto and was concerned. I took the test around 10:30 am which would only have been about 15 fasting hours and I was up at 7 am.
Sounds like reactive hypoglycemia. I’d be interested in your 90 and 120 minute measurements.
I don’t have a meter yet for BG or Ketones but an planning on getting one soon.
It’s only normal at a population level. His fasting BG is 120-130. Postprandial BG t=60 is 103. If his postprandial is substantially less than his fasting, it’s reactive hypo. Could be wrong, but I doubt it. That’s why I suggested getting his t=90 and t=120 readings. I suspect his BG readings would head back up toward his fasting level of 120-130, confirming that the postprandial level of 103 is reactive hypo.
Except that the definition of hypo at least in the UK would be sub 72… so saying 103 is hypo is pushing it don’t you think?
@KetoKashi There is a phenomenon called “physiological insulin resistance” or “adaptative glucose sparing,” in which the muscles, being fully fat-adapted, resist taking in glucose and ketone bodies, so as to save them for the organs that really need them. Do you know what your HbA1C is? If it’s below 5.5 there is usually no reason to worry.
If your doctor is still concerned after taking your HbA1C into account, perhaps an oral glucose tolerance test would be in order (but you have to eat carbohydrate for a certain number of days in advance, or the reading will be skewed).
Possibly. Though if my BG was 130, then I ate some carbs, and then 60 mins later my BG was 103, and then 60 mins later it was back up at 130, you have to suspect reactive hypoglycemia, don’t you? What other explanation can there be? I’m not suggesting that at 103 his BG is dangerously low, but the phenomenon is still one of too much insulin being produced, dropping his BG to below fasting levels.
Depends on time of day? Could be a case of dawn phenomenon… ?
If early in the keto journey and T2 diabetic would be a symptom…
could be down to sickness brewing a cold
or even stress…
Could be, though my understanding is @daddyoh is saying his fasting is 130 and he consistently gets a BG of around 100 at t=60 postprandial. If that’s the case, again, reactive hypoglycemia likely. But yep, if it’s a one-off, could be anything, really!
