High Cholesterol - Doc wants me on statins

#1

I’ve been keto for over 4 years. My cholesterol is high and my doc wants me on statins but I’ve refused for years. Here are my latest numbers: total cholesterol 312; triglycerides 80; HDL 90; LDL 206; Cholesterol/HDL ratio 3.5; VLDL 16. The doc has made me take 2 cardiac calcium scans over the last 4 years and they both revealed 0% plaque which indicates very low risk of heart disease. He recently did a CRP test and my result was .3 which indicates no inflammation and very low risk for heart disease. He now wants me to see a cardiologist because of my high cholesterol. I feel great. I’m 53 and am very active. I’m 5’3” and weigh 116#. What are your thoughts?

My thoughts? You are right, you don’t need statins. Your doctor needs to study up. :grinning:

Your physician wants to put you on a statin, even though your ratio of triglycerides to HDL is less than 1, and your CAC score is 0? Crazy!

(So, which pharmaceutical company does he work for?)

It’s challenging to go against a trusted doctor’s sincere request.
It took a while with mine. I think what finally convinced him was that I am healthier in every way than I have been in 30 years.

He has agreed that all my other markers are greater than one blood test’s interpretation. He’s on my side now and supportive. But he had no choice. He knows I will not and cannot take statins (I can’t physically tolerate them).

We do the lab work every year as part of my annul check up. But he no longer comments on cholesterol. Plus, he suggested keto for my son who recently was diagnosed with T2D. I believe my doc now offers it as an option.

An article where statins do no good for someone with a zero score:

And if you look hard enough, you can get a nice graph showing zero effect for statins for someone with zero CAC score.
