I have been ketogenic since the beginning of this year (mid-January). I have type 2 diabetes and the diet has allowed me to get off of 5 different medications 2 for diabetes, 1 for triglycerides, 1 for cholesterol, and another for high blood pressure. If you have seen my previous posts you know that it has not been an easy battle but I have felt good with my progress (even if it seemed slow, to me). Over the last month or so I started introducing IF and that seemed to get my blood sugars moving in the right directions. For a while, I became lazy and stopped tracking my macros and over time I noticed my blood sugars going back up. Even though I thought I was eating ok I thought maybe I was over eating or getting carbs in some way that I was not aware of. For the past couple of days, I have been tracking and I am on average eating 11-15 g of carbs a day but my blood sugars seem to keep climbing. It does not make sense.
It dawned on me that I had recently over the last month I was having a hard time drinking enough plain water so I started using water enhancers and drinking a lot of it.
They contain water, propylene glycol, malic acid, citric acid, sucralose and acesulfame potassium (sweeteners), natural flavor, potassium citrate, niacinamide, red 40, potassium sorbate (preservative), pyridoxine hydrochloride, blue 1, cyanocobalamin.
I also switched the Splenda packets I was putting in my coffee in the morning with liquid Apriva. Zero carbs is better than ~2g, right?
It contains: water, sucralose, malic acid, sodium benzoate (preservative), potassium sorbate (preservative).
I started wondering if there was a link to my high BG readings and the high amount of sweeteners I introduced. After googling I ran across this article (and others referencing the same study).
I am wondering if others have run across this or had similar experiences. One symptom that I have his random stomach feelings almost feels like an adrenaline rush around to the top of my stomach (this has been happening for a week or so, I get 2-3 per hour). I am not sure what is going on but I would like to get my BGs under control again. I am wondering if this may be an indication of possible bacteria build up discussed in the article. I really don’t know.
Since yesterday evening I have not used a water enhancer. My BG was high in the morning (maybe it takes a while). I tested after waking up, I put the liquid Apriva in my coffee (I love coffee but can not stomach it black). A half hour later I tested again but 20 points from the first reading. Admittedly I did put heavy cream (2 tbsp) in the coffee as well. I have not had an issue with this in the past.
This afternoon I tested it again in black coffee with the liquid Apriva … again a 20 point rise. Though I did eat lunch to day (low carb salad) which I don’t normally do with my IF routine, so that could be a confounder. I tested the before and after of the coffee 2 hours after lunch.
Does anyone have suggestions on how I can test this? I feel like I need sweetener of some kind in my coffee at least, I am not sure what to do or even if this is the issue. If it is not I can not explain the high BGs.
